The first time I heard “Alacabenzi,” I was thinking, this must be the magic word, kind of like “Abracadabra” or something. In a way, it is!

Alacabenzi is a type of psychedelic mushroom that can truly take you on your own personal magical mystery tour.

In this article, we’ll cover:

What Alacabenzi mushrooms are, including their strength, potency, and mycological features

The history of Alacabenzi mushrooms and their range

The effects and potential benefits of Alacabenzi shrooms

And answer questions about the legality of these and other psychedelic shrooms. Okay, watch us pull a rainbow flying rabbit out of nowhere, because it’s time for Alacabenzi mushrooms!

What are Alacabenzi Mushrooms?

Alacabenzi mushrooms are a type of psychedelic mushroom that belongs to the species Psilocybe cubensis. They are known for their high potency and are considered one of the stronger magic mushroom strains.

Like other categories of psilocybin mushrooms, Alacabenzi contain the psychoactive compounds psilocybin and psilocin, which can produce powerful psychedelic effects when consumed. These effects can include alterations in perception, mood, and thought, as well as visual and auditory hallucinations.

Alacabenzi mushrooms have a distinctive appearance, with large, meaty caps that are typically reddish-brown and a stem that is thick and white.

Now we can get into detail.

What is the History of Alacabenzi Mushrooms and Where Can You Find Them?

Humans have used psychedelic mushrooms such as Alacabenzi for millennia. However, although they are believed to be a cross of the genetics of two different strains, the exact history of Alacabenzi mushrooms is not well-documented.

One version of the story says they are a blend of a Psilocybe Cubensis found in the state of Alabama, sometimes called Golden Teachers, and Psilocybe Mexicana (hence the name). Another story simply says they are a hybrid strain of Liberty Caps (Psilocybe semilanceata) and Golden Teachers.

A third version agrees that the name “Alacabenzi” includes the word “Alabama,” the state where one of the parent strains was found, but refers to “Mazatepec, Mexico” as the namesake for the second half of the name—and the supposed locale for the source Psilocybe Cubensis mushrooms.

Whatever their origins, like other strains of Psilocybe Cubensis, Alacabenzi mushrooms are commonly found growing in subtropical and tropical regions, including parts of South and Central America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and some regions of Africa. Psilocybe Cubensis is a species that thrives in warm and humid conditions, and they often grow in grassy areas, on decaying organic matter, or on cow dung.

Alacabenzi mushrooms are often cultivated by individuals for personal or commercial use. They can be grown a variety of ways, including with grow kits, spores, or mycelium.

What are the Effects of Alacabenzi Magic Mushrooms?

Generally, Alacabenzi mushrooms are known for producing a range of psychedelic head effects, including alterations in perception, mood, and thought. These effects are primarily thanks to the presence of the psychoactive compounds psilocybin and psilocin, which interact with serotonin receptors in the brain.

Although the effects vary significantly from person to person, there are some themes. Many people report experiencing a sense of euphoria, feelings of relaxation, or spiritual connectedness while using Alacabenzi mushrooms.

Alacabenzi mushrooms also produce auditory hallucinations and visuals. Technically, visual psychedelic effects can look like almost anything, but a few patterns tend to emerge in the reports of users:

Distortions of perception and reality. Objects may appear to change in size or shape, or colors may appear more intense or muted. Some people may experience a sense of synesthesia, the perception of sounds or smells as visual experiences.

Patterns and textures. Patterns and textures may appear to shift or morph, and surfaces may appear to ripple or breathe.

Geometric shapes. Some people experience complex geometric shapes, such as fractals or mandalas, moving or pulsating.

Tracers and afterimages. Moving objects may leave tracers or afterimages, and objects may appear to leave behind trails or streaks of light.

The effects of Alacabenzi mushrooms can vary depending on a lot of factors, and there are a range of potential risks and benefits. Some factors that influence the mind and body effects users experience include:

the dosage and amount consumed

the individual’s body chemistry

set and setting (including mental and physical state, number of times the person has used the substance before, and the place in which they are using the mushrooms).

Very high doses of all types of psychedelic substances can produce physical effects such as loss of balance or a change in normal heart rate, as well as sensations of anxiety or paranoia.

How are Alacabenzi Similar or Different from Other Substances?

The effects of Alacabenzi mushrooms can be similar to those of other psychedelic substances, such as LSD, mescaline, and DMT. For example, all of these substances commonly alter thought processes and perceptions and change mood.

However, the specific effects can differ between substances. Specifically, the duration, intensity, and subjective experience of the effects of these substances is likely to be different. For example, while the effects of Alacabenzi and other mushrooms are likely to last for 4 to 6 hours, the effects of a psychedelic such as LSD will last much longer, for up to 12 hours or longer.

While Alacabenzi mushrooms might make some users feel “high” in some ways, they are not like cannabis, which has different psychoactive compounds and effects.

What Does the Research Say About the Therapeutic Benefits of Psilocybin?

There is growing interest in the potential therapeutic benefits of psilocybin, the psychoactive compound found in Alacabenzi mushrooms and other species of Psilocybe. There appear to be a variety of applications under investigation.

While research in this area is still in its early stages, several studies have suggested that psilocybin may be useful in the treatment of a range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Others focus on its use as adjunctive therapy in reducing anxiety and existential distress in patients with advanced cancer who are receiving end of life treatments.

How Strong are Alacabenzi Mushrooms?

Alacabenzi mushrooms are known for potency, but what does this mean?

Part of this is a result of their mycological features and biochemistry, but a lot has to do with the individual user, too.

The effect that this type of mushroom will have depends on several things, including:

the strain

its potency

the size of the dose

the user’s relative experience with psychedelics

any concurrent doses of another product such as cannabis edibles, even low THC/high CBD products

How specifically are Alacabenzi different from other psychedelic mushrooms? And how are they different from other types of Psilocybe Cubensis, for that matter?

Alacabenzi mushrooms are a unique strain of Psilocybe Cubensis, and they have distinct traits among psychedelic mushrooms.

One key difference between Alacabenzi mushrooms and other strains of Psilocybe Cubensis is their appearance. Alacabenzi mushrooms are typically larger than other Cubensis strains, with thick, meaty caps that tend to be reddish-brown.

They also have thick stems that are white and can reach up to 10-15 cm in length. All parts of the mushroom are typically consumed.

In fact, their size is one reason that may account for the reputation of Alacabenzi mushrooms, which are known for being relatively potent. Their effects can last anywhere from 4-6 hours, and while this is similar to other strains of Psilocybe Cubensis, the exact potency and psilocybin content can vary depending on a variety of factors.

Alacabenzi mushrooms also have a unique flavor and aroma, which many people describe as nutty or earthy. They are often consumed in dried form or used to make tea or other preparations. Potency and a unique appearance and flavor profile make this psychedelic mushroom stand out from other varieties.

How to Grow the Alacabenzi Magic Mushroom From Spores as a Beginner

The easiest way for brand new growers to get their hands on these shrooms is to use a kit. These products make the whole process of growing your own Alacabenzi mushrooms by hand easier, and most grow kits allow you to get 3 or 4 flushes each. (Watch the developing gills for a veil that protects the spores until right before the release.)

Typically a grow kit contains some form of sterile substrate that is either inoculated with spores or ready for you to use your own. The best kits are usable for beginners and include detailed instructions—sometimes with video support.

It’s an affordable option that you can order online—that’s certainly easier than foraging in the wild (which can be seriously unsafe—and even deadly).

Wait. Is it actually safe to order something like Alacabenzi shrooms or a grow kit for them online? Yes, for the most part.

Whenever I’m looking to make a major new purchase, the first thing I do is ask my friends and family where they shop, but when it comes to just casually asking Aunt Marge where to get top quality magic mushrooms online, that’s too awkward for me.

Instead, here’s what we look for:

Choice. Is the list of products appealing? What about the kinds of products; if it’s a kit, does it include all you want? Are there the strains and spores you’re looking for?

Proof of good service. What services does the business offer? Free shipping over a certain amount? Is there someone who follows up on cases of lost or stolen packages?

Value. Best price is never a down side!

Quality. Look for comments and reviews from real users—not a bunch of AI-generated clones.

There are other online options for getting hold of some interesting strains of magic mushrooms. Spores for Alacabenzi Cubensis as well as Psilocybe Cubensis, Psilocybe Mexicana, and other psilocybin rich species are sold on many sites, and from some scientific suppliers.

Check out our more detailed guides to growing mushrooms elsewhere on the site. We also have lots of other items packed with information on things like kits and how strains compare. (That first harvest is pretty exciting, we can’t lie.)

Remember, although these mushrooms may not be that tough to grow, they can take you on a serious trip! Do some careful research before making your choice.

Are Alacabenzi Mushrooms Legal?

The possession, sale, and use of Alacabenzi mushrooms and other psychedelic substances are illegal in many parts of the world, including the United States. This is true for people of any age, and even for people with medical conditions. In these places, any person in possession of these mushrooms may face legal consequences for cultivating or possessing these substances.

However, some localities in the US have decriminalized psychedelics, including a few cities in California and Colorado. This is great progress, especially for anyone of age who lives in the area!

Note: Don’t be confused by medical marijuana laws that allow products with some THC content, which is totally different, or by the use of some psychedelics in clinical research. Check local laws before you make purchases.

Final Thoughts on Alacabenzi Mushrooms

We hope our introduction to the strangely strong—and magical!—world of Alacabenzi mushrooms has been informative for you. Are you thinking about growing yourself a box full of magic?

If you thought I was talking about a sweet grill for your smile—think again! These gold cap mushrooms are not here to boost your ego. It’s not that kind of trip!

In this article, we’re going to cover everything you need to know about Gold Cap Mushrooms, including:

What these Cap Gold fungi are, what they look like, and where they are found

What are the effects of Gold Caps, and what factors into them?

How to grow Gold Top Mushrooms, and whether or not they’re legal

And much more! So let’s get going on our trip!

What Are Gold Cap Mushrooms?

Gold Caps mushrooms, also called Gold Tops, Cap Golds, and similar iterations of the name, are a strain of the Psilocybe cubensis mushroom. These shrooms are the largest species among magic mushrooms.

This species of psilocybin mushrooms is known for its physical characteristics and effects.

Physically, exquisite gold tops, which have the lightest colors in the middle of the caps and a darker brown ring around the edges of the tops. The caps are also a lighter color than the darker brown stems, which are slim and graceful.

Psilocybe cubensis, sometimes simply called cubies, is a form of fungus with a fairly large range around the world, particularly in the Western Hemisphere. Golden cubes as well as other varieties of fungi tend to grow in and around the dung of cows and goats in Cuba, Mexico, and other countries in Central America, stretching down through much of South America.

What are the Effects of Gold Cap Mushrooms?

Gold Caps are equally famous, of course, for their equally dazzling psychedelic effects driven by psilocybin and psilocin. These psychoactive compounds produce a range of effects in the mind and body, including:

Altered perception. Psilocybin and psilocin can change the way a person perceives their surroundings. Colors may appear more vivid, objects may appear distorted or warped, and sounds may seem louder or more intense.

Changes in mood. Psilocybin and psilocin affect mood, and can cause users to feel relaxed, euphoric, or introspective.

Spiritual experiences. Many people who take psilocybin and psilocin report having profound spiritual experiences or feelings of being one with the universe.

Cognitive changes and head effects. Psilocybin and psilocin can also alter a person’s thought patterns, leading to more abstract and creative thinking.

Physiological effects. Psilocybin and psilocin can have physiological effects, such as increased heart rate, nausea, and changes in blood pressure.

The effects people experience from using Gold Caps depends on several factors, including the mushrooms’ potency and psilocybin and psilocin content, the dosage taken, the setting in which the mushroom is used, and the person’s individual tolerance. A very low dose of the exact same mushroom can have a very different effect than a high dose!

How to Grow Gold Caps Mushrooms

Although cultivation of Golden Tops is not much different than other kinds of shrooms, it does take some focus, high quality spores, the right environments, and careful attention to a few sound methods such as PF Tek.

If you’re eager to get started on your home Caps Gold harvest and you want to read about some techniques, check out our Psilocybe cyanescens post that touches on what compounds to use, how caps and gills look when it’s time to harvest, strains that can grow together, and more.

How Does Use of Gold Caps Compare to Other Mushrooms and Psychedelics?

How does the use of Gold Caps and other strains of Psilocybe cubensis compare other species of magic mushrooms? Psilocybe cubensis is known to be among the most potent forms of magic mushrooms. A potent dose of Gold Cap Mushroom is likely to be as potent as almost any other variety of shroom.

(For a detailed comparison of various Psilocybe mushroom species and how others all compare, see our Psilocybe cyanescens post. This post also provides a useful comparison of Psilocybin mushrooms vs LSD.)

Are Gold Cap Mushrooms Legal?

It depends on where you are and what you are doing. Several municipalities in the states of Colorado and California have decriminalized Cap Gold and other psilocybin mushrooms along with other psychedelic substance use, and interest in the use of the magic mushroom for health purposes is growing fast thanks to ongoing research studies.

Because of this, certain individuals with the right kinds of expertise, information, and project needs, including company or university researchers, can access spores and supplies for growing Golden Cap Mushrooms.

Final Thoughts on Gold Cap Mushrooms

At this point in life for us, there’s no better way to spend a lovely afternoon in nature or a (rare and precious!) evening together with close friends than “cubing it” on a very nice trip with some gold caps. Whether brewed into a tea or made into a golden capsule, these little gems can open up a world of new experiences for just about anyone.

Ready for some deep personal knowledge? It’s Golden Teacher time!

In this post, we’re going to cover all the details about Golden Teacher mushrooms, including:

What Golden Teacher shrooms are

What the effects of Golden Teachers are

What do Golden Teachers feel like?

And a lot more…so let’s get started!

What Are Golden Teachers?

Golden Teacher mushrooms are a kind of psychedelic fungi. This hallucinogen is known for its golden caps and the unique, spiritual experiences it can induce in humans.

Scientifically known as Psilocybe cubensis, Golden Teachers are one of the most popular and widely cultivated strains of magic mushrooms. The name “Golden Teacher” is said to be thanks to the mushrooms’ ability to teach users about themselves and the world around them.

The psychoactive compounds in Golden Teacher mushrooms are psilocybin and psilocin, which are known to produce intense, mystical experiences filled with altered perceptions, heightened emotions, and profound insights. Many people like to use Golden Teacher mushrooms because of their moderate, middle of the road potency and for spiritual purposes.

How do Golden Teachers Compare to Other Hallucinogens Like LSD?

Psilocybin, the hallucinogen in Golden Teachers, and LSD are both powerful, but they differ in terms of their potency and effects.

Psilocybin is considered to be a moderately potent psychedelic. The effects of psilocybin can vary depending on the dose, but users usually report a profound alteration in their sensory perception, mood, and thought processes. Typical doses of psilocybin-containing mushrooms range from 1-5 grams, with effects lasting between 4-6 hours.

LSD, in contrast, is synthetic and about 100 times more potent than psilocybin on a per-weight basis. A typical dose ranges from 50-150 micrograms. The effects of LSD are similar to psilocybin, but they can be more intense and last longer, typically between 8-12 hours.

Additionally, there are many other types of hallucinogens, such as mescaline, DMT, and ketamine, which also vary in terms of potency and effects. Remember, the effects of any hallucinogenic substance can vary depending on a number of factors, such as individual sensitivity, the dose, psilocybin/psilocin concentration, the setting, and other factors.

What Are the Effects of Golden Teachers?

Golden Teachers, which contain psilocybin and psilocin, can produce a complex and wide-ranging range of pharmacological and physiological effects, varying widely depending on amount taken and other factors.

Neurotransmitter activity. Psilocybin and psilocin are believed to work by binding to serotonin receptors in the brain, causing increased activity in certain regions. This results in changes in perception, mood, and cognition.

Psychological effects. Psilocybin and psilocin are hallucinogens known to alter perceptions, heighten emotions, and offer profound insights. This can include visual and auditory hallucinations, as well as changes in mood, thought patterns, and sense of self. The experience is often described as a “trip” or a journey into the depths of one’s own psyche.

Physiological effects. In addition to psychological effects, psilocybin and psilocin can also produce physiological effects such as increased heart rate, dilated pupils, and blood pressure, and changes in body temperature. They can also affect the digestive system, causing side effects like nausea and vomiting in some users.

Therapeutic effects. Recent trials have suggested that psilocybin and psilocin may have therapeutic potential for treating a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. These effects are thought to be related to the drugs’ ability to increase neural plasticity and promote neurogenesis in the brain. [For more on this concept, see this study in psychotherapy patients or this research on use of psilocybin-assisted therapy in medicine, for example.]

What does it feel like to take Golden Teacher mushrooms, from a subjective standpoint? There are differences for everyone, but here is some information about common themes users talk about:

Alterations in perception. Among the most notable effects of psilocybin and psilocin is the alteration of sensory perception and awareness levels. Users may experience changes in auditory and visual perception, such as seeing colors, patterns, and shapes or hearing sounds that are distorted, not normally present, or amplified in the mind.

Heightened emotions. Golden Teacher mushrooms can also produce a range of emotional experiences, from euphoria and joy to anxiety and fear. Some people stay fairly relaxed and content, while others have the ability to turn on a dime throughout the trip.

Spiritual and mystical experiences. Many users report having profound spiritual or mystical experiences while under the influence of Golden Teacher mushrooms. These experiences can be difficult to put into words, but may involve feelings of interconnectedness with others and the universe, close to nature, a sense of transcendence, and access to insights into the reasons for their existence.

Physical effects. In addition to the psychological effects, Golden Teacher mushrooms can also produce physical effects such as changes in body temperature and altered heart rate. Some users may also experience nausea and vomiting or feel their hand or foot movements are out of their control.

The effects of psilocybin, psilocin, and Golden Teacher mushrooms can vary widely depending on factors such as dosage, age, physical makeup, individual sensitivity, history of usage, and setting.

What is Ego Loss and How Do Mushrooms Cause It?

Ego loss, at times called ego death, describes a profound psychological experience in which an individual loses their sense of self or identity. It is often associated with the use of psychedelic substances such as DMT, LSD, or psilocybin, but can also occur spontaneously via meditative or spiritual practices.

During an experience of ego loss, a person may feel as if they are actually part of their surroundings, becoming one with the universe. They may lose their sense of time and space, and feel as if they are experiencing the present moment in an intensely vivid and meaningful way.

Some individuals may experience a sense of infinite consciousness or unity with all things, while others may feel as if they are floating in a void or experiencing a sense of nothingness. This can be a transformative, deeply spiritual experience, but it can also be frightening or overwhelming.

Ego loss is not necessarily permanent, and most people return to a sense of normalcy after the effects of the psychedelic substance wear off. However, the experience itself can have effects and benefits for worldview, values, and sense of self that last for life.

[For studies on ego loss see PubMed here.]

Where Are Golden Teachers Found—And How Hard Is It to Grow Them?

The Golden Teacher species is found naturally in many parts of the world, including North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. They typically grow in warm and humid environments, such as cow pastures, fields, and forests. In their natural habitat, they usually grow from late spring to early fall, but can also grow year-round in subtropical and tropical regions.

In the wild, Golden Teacher mushrooms grow as fruiting bodies from a network of underground mycelium. The mycelium absorbs nutrients from the soil and breaks down organic matter, such as decaying plant material and animal waste. When cultivation requirements are met, the mycelium will produce mushrooms, which release spores into the air to reproduce.

Golden Teacher mushrooms along with other varieties can also be cultivated indoors using several methods. One common process is to grow them on a substrate, such as a mix of straw, vermiculite, and water, which is inoculated with mushroom spores or mycelium. The substrate is then placed in a container, such as a plastic bag or a growing chamber, where it can be kept at a temperature and humidity that is ideal for mushroom growth rate.

What Do Golden Teachers Look Like?

Golden Teacher mushrooms are named for their distinctive appearance and pharmacological properties. However, they’re not as unique looking as varieties like Penis Envy, for example, and it’s not hard to confuse them with other species.

Here are some key characteristics to look for:

Cap. Golden Teacher mushrooms typically have a convex or bell-shaped cap or top that is about 1-5 cm in diameter when fully grown. This large size is why the caps are often used to make gill prints. The cap can vary in color from light tan to golden brown, and may have a slightly wrinkled appearance. In some samples, you may see blue spots from bruising that are caused by psilocybin content.

Stem. The stem of Golden Teacher mushrooms is usually about 5-15 cm long and 0.2-1.5 cm thick. It is typically white or pale yellow in color and may be covered in fine fibers or scales.

Gills. The underside of the cap is lined with gills that radiate out from the stem. The gills are usually dark purple-brown in color and may be separated by lighter colored veins.

Spores. When the mushrooms mature, they release spores that are dark purple-brown in color.

Although Golden Teacher mushrooms are distinctive looking in some ways, it’s easy to confuse them with other species of mushroom—some of which may be poisonous. If you still have an interest, buying mushrooms from a reputable vendor who specializes in cultivating and selling Golden Teachers is definitely a safer and more reliable choice.

Are Golden Teachers Legal?

The legality of Golden Teacher mushrooms, or any type of psilocybin-containing mushroom, varies by country, state, and province. In many places around the world, including the United States, Canada, and many European countries, psilocybin mushrooms are classified as illegal drugs and their possession, cultivation, sale, or distribution is prohibited.

However, psilocybin-containing mushrooms, including Golden Teachers, have been decriminalized or legalized in some states and cities in the United States, including Santa Cruz in California and the entire state of Oregon. In these areas, possession and use of shrooms is either no longer punished criminally or allowed for medical purposes for qualifying patients.

Even in these areas where psychedelics have been decriminalized or legalized, the sale and distribution of magic mushrooms is generally still illegal. It’s always a good idea to check the specific laws and regulations in your area to ensure that you are complying with local regulations.

Final Thoughts on Golden Teachers

Are you done feeling curious and ready to give this magic mushroom strain a try? Golden Teachers are the perfect place to start your trip.

It’s 2023 and we’re all cruising into a new age of psychedelic exploration…well, in a way. If you’re on the journey, you may have some questions about blue meanies mushrooms, a type of magic mushrooms or shrooms.

In this article, we’ll cover:

What blue meanies are and why they’re called that

How to identify and grow blue meanies and where they grow naturally

The relationship with psilocybin, potency of blue meanies, look-alikes and other options, and more

We’ve got everything you need to know about blue meanies right here on this site, so let’s get this trip started!

What Are Blue Meanies Mushrooms?

Blue meanies mushrooms, more formally titled Panaeolus cyanescens, are a species of mushroom that contains the psychoactive chemical compound psilocybin. These mushrooms are typically found in warm and humid climates, such as those in Hawaii, Florida, Australia, and parts of Central and South America.

Mushrooms containing psilocybin have been used throughout human history. When users ingest the psilocybin in Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms, it can produce a range of effects on perception, thought, and mood. These effects may include altered sensory experiences, changes in perception of time and space, feelings of euphoria, and profound changes in one’s sense of emotions like love and hate, self and the world.

Where Does the Name “Blue Meanies” Come From?

These aren’t the Blue Meanies war monger characters from the peace film, Yellow Submarine, trying to silence Pepperland. This was starring your grandparents favorite band, The Beatles, and there is no known connection in the naming with this species—although that would be pretty cool, and it makes sense that you might see antagonists with the long ears while tripping.

(See wikipedia if you’re looking for the movie.)

The name “blue meanies” is a common nickname for Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms. It is thought to have originated from the blue color—ranging from a lighter sky or baby blue to a deep navy—that the cap and stem can develop as they mature. When users handle or bruise the flesh of the mushroom, it can turn this deeper ocean blue color due to the presence of psilocybin.

The term “meanies” likely references the potent psychoactive effects of these mushrooms, which can be intense and challenging for some individuals. However, it’s worth noting that the term “blue meanies” or just “meanies” can also refer to at least one other species, Copelandia cyanescens, also known for blue coloration produced by potent psilocybin content.

How to Identify Blue Meanies

Identifying Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms is something that requires a bit of knowledge and expertise, as they can easily be confused with other categories and species of mushrooms. Here are a few key characteristics to look for:

Habitat. Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms are typically found in warm and humid climates, often growing in grassy areas or on animal dung. They are most commonly found in Hawaii, Florida, and parts of Central and South America.

Appearance and description. Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms have a bell-shaped cap that is typically brown or tan in color, with a distinctive nipple at the center. The stem is thin and can develop a bluish tint when bruised or handled.

Spore print. When the cap of a Panaeolus cyanescens mushroom is placed gill-side down on a piece of paper or glass, it will leave behind a spore print that is black or dark purple in color.

Identifying mushrooms in the wild can be difficult and potentially dangerous, as some species of mushrooms are toxic or deadly. If you’re unsure about the identification of a mushroom, it’s best to consult with a mycologist or other expert before consuming it.

Where Do Blue Meanies Grow?

Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms are most commonly found in the warm and humid weather they prefer. These tropical and subtropical regions are found in various parts of the world including Hawaii, Florida, Australia, and parts of Central and South America.

In the wild, they are typically found growing in pastures, lawns, or along roadsides, frequently in groups or clusters since they often grow in, near, or on animal dung. People also cultivate them indoors using some version of a substrate such as straw or grain.

Is Panaeolus Related to Psilocybin?

Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms are known for their high concentrations of the psychoactive compound psilocybin. Psilocybin is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is found in various species of fungi, including Panaeolus cyanescens, as well as other mushrooms in the Psilocybe genus such as Psilocybe cubensis.

When ingested, psilocybin is metabolized by the body into psilocin, which is responsible for the hallucinogenic effects associated with these mushrooms. Users often cycle through feeling happy, mad, sad, and introspective as they experience psilocybin.

Psilocybin has been shown to have a profound impact on brain function, particularly in areas of the brain responsible for mood, perception, and thought. Research has suggested that psilocybin may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of conditions such as depression, anxiety, and addiction, although more research is needed in this area.

Using psilocybin-containing mushrooms can be potentially dangerous, particularly if consumed in large doses or in combination with other drugs. If you are considering using psilocybin-containing mushrooms, it’s important to educate yourself on the potential risks and benefits, and to seek guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.

Genetic Relatives of Panaeolus Cyanescen

Panaeolus cyanescens is among the members of the genus Panaeolus, which includes a number of other types of mushroom species. Some of the other commonly known species in the Panaeolus genus include Panaeolus subbalteatus (also known as the “weilii mushroom”), Panaeolus cinctulus (also known as the “belted Panaeolus”), and Panaeolus tropicalis.

While some species in the Panaeolus genus may look similar to Panaeolus cyanescens, they may not contain the same levels of psilocybin or other psychoactive compounds. Additionally, some kinds of species in the Panaeolus genus are toxic or potentially deadly, so it’s important to exercise caution when identifying and consuming any type of mushroom species.

Are Blue Meanies Potent?

Panaeolus cyanescens are known to be one of the most potent species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms. They typically contain higher levels of psilocybin and psilocin compared to other species of psychedelic mushrooms, which can result in a more intense and longer-lasting experience when consumed.

The psychoactive effects of Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms can vary depending on a number of factors, including the dose, the individual’s body weight, and their sensitivity to psilocybin. Some individuals may experience intense visual and auditory hallucinations, while others may feel a deep sense of introspection, calm, or emotional release of angry feelings, resentment, and bitterness.

Some sources indicate that blue meanies contain a combined content of psilocybin and psilocin around 0.5 to 2.95 percent dry weight each. Researchers have identified Panaeolus cyanescens as a variably potent species, with psilocin and psilocybin usually falling between 0.17 to 0.95 percent and 0.16 to 0.19 percent. Even the same species of mushroom may differ from strain to strain or even by batch or lot number, depending on how they are sold.

How to Grow Panaeolus Cyanescens

Growing Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms can be a complex process that requires careful attention to environmental conditions and sanitation. Here are the basic steps involved in growing Panaeolus cyanescens:

Spore inoculation. The first step in growing Panaeolus cyanescens is to obtain spores of the mushroom. Spores can be purchased from online vendors or obtained from a mature mushroom. The spores are then sterilized and inoculated onto a substrate such as rye grain or brown rice flour.

Substrate colonization. Once the spores have been inoculated onto the substrate, they will begin to grow and colonize the substrate. This process can take anywhere from several days to several weeks, depending on the environmental conditions and the quality of the substrate.

Spawning. Once the substrate has been fully colonized with mycelium, it can be transferred to a larger container for spawning. This can be done by mixing the colonized substrate with a nutrient-rich substrate such as horse manure or straw.

Fruiting. After the substrate has been spawned, place it in a humid and warm environment to encourage the mushrooms to fruit for the remainder of their life. This process can take several weeks, and requires careful attention to environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and lighting.

Harvesting. Once the mushrooms have fully matured, they can be harvested by gently pulling them from the substrate. It’s important to harvest the mushrooms before the caps have fully opened, as this can reduce their potency.

It’s worth noting that growing psilocybin-containing mushrooms is illegal in many parts of the world, and can be potentially dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. If you’re interested in growing mushrooms, it’s important to educate yourself on the risks and benefits, and to seek guidance from a qualified mycologist or other expert.

What Other Fungi Are Panaeolus Cyanescens Look-Alikes?

Yes, there are other strains and species of mushrooms that can resemble Panaeolus cyanescens and can be confused with it. Some of these look-alike species include Panaeolina foenisecii, Panaeolus fimicola, and Psilocybe fimetaria.

Panaeolina foenisecii is a small brown mushroom that can grow in grassy areas and can resemble Panaeolus cyanescens in its appearance. However, Panaeolina foenisecii does not contain psychoactive compounds, and consuming it will not produce the same effects as Panaeolus cyanescens.

Panaeolus fimicola is another species of mushroom that can resemble Panaeolus cyanescens in appearance, and is often found in the same habitats. However, Panaeolus fimicola contains much lower levels of psychoactive compounds compared to Panaeolus cyanescens, and may not produce the same effects when consumed.

Psilocybe fimetaria is a species of mushroom that is sometimes mistaken for Panaeolus cyanescens, as it also contains psychoactive compounds and can have a similar appearance. However, Psilocybe fimetaria typically grows in different habitats than Panaeolus cyanescens, and has a slightly different appearance.

It’s important to exercise caution when identifying and consuming mushrooms, and to seek guidance from a qualified mycologist or other expert if you’re unsure about the identity of a particular species.

The past decade has seen numerous clinical trials focused on the medicinal and psychological benefits of psychedelics. The results couldn’t be more promising, and yet the next steps of psychedelics are the most crucial. Psychedelics are still registered as Schedule 1 substances, despite evidence that they are neither addictive nor widely abused.

This restriction means that psychedelic-assisted therapy and other treatments are withheld from patients. Red tape, paranoia, and outdated stigma have kept medicine from those who need it most.

Change is in the air, though. There has been a ton of buzz in the news about MDMA therapy—and rightly so. As the researchers and clinicians reach the next steps in the slow march toward regulatory approval, you might be wondering: what does MDMA-assisted therapy do, and what could it do for me?

In this post, we’ll cover:

What MDMA is, the pharmacology of MDMA, and how it works in a mental health setting

How health care researchers are researching MDMA treatment in clinical settings and pushing toward legal access to the drug through the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

MDMA reaching the next step toward approval and what is coming in the future

And more! So let’s get started…

What is MDMA?

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a synthetic compound that alters perception and mood. It belongs to the class of psychoactive drugs known as entactogens, which means “touching within.”

In terms of psychopharmacology, MDMA is chemically similar to hallucinogens such as psilocybin or ketamine. It is also similar to stimulants such as ecstasy and cocaine. MDMA produces feelings of increased emotional warmth, pleasure, and energy, as well as a distorted perception of time and sensory input.

MDMA works by increasing the activity of three neurotransmitters in the brain: serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. It primarily stimulates the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, social behavior, appetite, sleep, and other functions. MDMA also causes the release of oxytocin, a hormone that plays a role in social bonding and trust.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy

For context, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is notoriously difficult to treat. The disorder affects roughly 8 million adults any given year. Many patients who are resistant to traditional treatment have little recourse. In fact, it’s been 17 years since the release of the last new medication for this disorder.

PTSD damages relationships, careers, and wellbeing. It often causes increased depression, which in some tragic cases, leads to suicide.

Psychotherapy is a partnership between therapist and patient, one that depends on trust, candidness, vulnerability, and an open mind. The problem is that PTSD often causes distrust and defensive tendencies. Deeply ingrained fear responses can keep the walls up, making it difficult to process the root of traumatic experiences. Psychological healing can be very challenging under these circumstances.

What is MDMA Therapy?

MDMA therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses MDMA as an adjunct to treatment. It involves the administration of a single dose of MDMA in a controlled setting with the guidance of trained therapists. The therapy typically involves two or three sessions.

The psychotherapy sessions last for about 6-8 hours. Patients ingest the MDMA and begin with relaxing breathwork guided by psychotherapists.

During an MDMA therapy session, the patient takes the drug and then engages in talk therapy with the therapy team. Two specially trained therapists guide the session – generally a male and a female, a recommended arrangement for those with childhood trauma.

The patient spends much of the session reclined, listening to music and going within. The next steps include therapeutic and supportive conversation.

The therapy is designed to help the patient explore and process difficult emotions, traumatic experiences, and other psychological issues. The effects of MDMA can help the patient feel more open, empathetic, and connected, which can facilitate deeper insights and emotional breakthroughs.

MDMA is a known catalyst for profound breakthroughs and insights into the self. In a therapeutic setting, it raises awareness of different aspects of the psyche. This allows patients to safely explore difficult mental and emotional states with clarity and compassion.

Therapists involved in these trials report that many patients come to unprompted breakthroughs and epiphanies on their own. The participants themselves have likened MDMA to an “inner healer”, or a spring cleaning of the mind. It gives patients the courage and space to deal with traumatic memories and process deep-seated fears.

How does MDMA-assisted therapy help push patients through the hurdle of recovery in a physiological sense? MDMA combats the distrust, defensive tendencies, and deeply ingrained fear responses created by traumatic experiences by releasing serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine into the system, as well as increasing neurohormones oxytocin levels. It accelerates emotional processing and lowers activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for processing fear.

This cocktail of reward system chemicals reduces defensive responses while enhancing compassion, social connection, and introspection. Patients are more likely to trust therapists and engage with deep internal processing around their fears and trauma.

[For more on the potential uses of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, see this Rick Doblin interview]

Phases of MDMA Therapy

MDMA therapy is currently being studied as a potential treatment for a variety of mental health conditions, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and addiction. An MDMA-assisted therapy session typically involves a preparation phase, the session itself, and an integration phase.

In the preparation phase, the therapist or team of therapists will work with the patient to establish a relationship of trust and safety. They will discuss the goals of the therapy, the patient’s medical history, and any potential risks or side effects of the treatment. The patient may also be given some tasks to complete before the session to help them prepare mentally and emotionally.

During the sessions, the patient takes the doses of MDMA under the supervision of the therapists. The effects of the drug typically start within 30-45 minutes and can last for up to six hours. During this time, the patient engages in talk therapy with the therapists.

The therapist may encourage the patient to explore their emotions, thoughts, and memories, and to focus on the present moment. The therapist may also use techniques like guided meditation, music, or art to help the patient connect with their feelings and thoughts.

The experience of an MDMA-assisted therapy session can vary depending on the individual and their specific needs. Some patients may feel a sense of euphoria, relaxation, or openness. They may experience a heightened sense of empathy and connection with others and reduced defensiveness. Others may experience difficult emotions or memories that need to be processed with the help of therapists.

After the session, the patient enters the integration phase. This is when the patient works with the therapists to integrate the insights and experiences from the session into their daily life. The therapists may help the patient create a plan for ongoing self-care and support, and may offer additional therapy sessions as needed.

It’s important to note that MDMA-assisted therapy should only be conducted under the guidance of trained therapists in a controlled setting.

Science of MDMA

The scientific research on MDMA for PTSD and depression is in a blossoming stage. There is growing evidence that suggests it may be a promising treatment option.

MDMA was first used in couples therapy with success. In this context a variety of symptomologies may present and multiple treatment modalities may be used.

Studies have shown that MDMA-assisted therapy can be effective in reducing symptoms of severe PTSD, treatment-resistant PTSD, and other patients who have not responded to traditional therapies.

For example, a phase 2 clinical trial found that MDMA-assisted therapy was associated with significant improvement in PTSD symptoms in veterans, firefighters, and police officers with chronic PTSD. There is also evidence that MDMA treatment produces significant improvement in eating disorder symptoms among adults with a PTSD diagnosis.

[For a recent meta-analysis on MDMA and PTSD see Mitchell et al at DOI: 10.1002/jcph.1995]

There is also some evidence that MDMA-assisted therapy may be helpful in treating depression. A study published in 2020 found that MDMA-assisted therapy was associated with significant reductions in symptoms of depression in patients with life-threatening illnesses.

The nonprofit organization Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS Public Benefit Corporation, MAPS PBC, or just MAPS) is soon to complete its multi-site Phase 3 trials on MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD. It follows the success of their Phase 2 trials, which showed groundbreaking results.

The MAPS MDMA research team recruited 105 participants with severe PTSD. The majority of subjects had attempted various treatments in the past, without lasting success.

After receiving just three sessions of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, the subjects reported incredible improvements to their mental health. 12 months on, 68% no longer suffered any symptoms of PTSD.

Follow-up studies over three years later confirmed that the results were long-lasting. The evidence is clear. MDMA-assisted psychotherapy represents the next steps of psychedelic treatment, and is more effective than any other for PTSD.

With this and other MDMA Phase 3 trials in the final stretch, the results will likely be just as statistically significant. Once the numbers are confirmed, the FDA will approve MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD treatment.

Current Legal Status

In the United States, MDMA is classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it is considered to have a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use. This classification makes it difficult for researchers to conduct clinical trials and for patients to access the drug for therapeutic purposes.

However, the FDA has granted breakthrough therapy designation to MDMA-assisted treatment of PTSD, which is a recognition of the potential therapeutic benefit of the treatment. This designation allows for an expedited development and review process for drugs that may offer significant benefits over existing treatments.

The FDA has also authorized several clinical trials of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, which are being conducted under the guidance of trained therapists in a controlled setting. These trials are intended to gather evidence on the efficacy and safety of this type of psychedelic-guided psychotherapy, with the goal of potentially gaining FDA approval for it in the future.

Additionally, through the expanded access program, which allows patients to receive investigational MDMA therapy although it is not yet FDA-approved for use outside clinical trials, certain patients with life-threatening conditions or other very serious issues without any other promising options or ongoing clinical trials may be able to receive MDMA. The only eligible sites in the FDA Expanded Access Program are located within the U.S and U.S territories.

California has recently attempted—unsuccessfully—to decriminalize magic mushrooms containing psilocybin as well as other psychedelics throughout the state. Although the measure failed, the state remains on the cutting edge in this area, with psychedelic therapy of various kinds available at multiple sites. And since both Oakland and Santa Cruz have decriminalized all psychedelics, many of these facilities are focused around these areas.

MDMA’s Next Steps Toward Approval

MAPS is currently working through the final rigorous stages of the Phase 3 trials. After successful Phase 3 trials, clinical data goes to the FDA and other governing bodies worldwide for review and, eventually, approval and the market. Their priority now is to confirm the efficacy and safety of the treatment, the last step toward obtaining MDMA FDA approval.

The final studies are double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trials taking place across the US, Canada, and Israel. The coronavirus pandemic delayed the trials, but 90 of the 100 subjects have already completed the process. Still, the FDA is working with MAPS to ensure approval as soon as possible.

A recent third-party analysis of the data collected so far revealed a 90% probability that the results will be successful. Put simply, MAPS is well on its way to meeting the FDA’s requirements.

Future MDMA Research

These trials represent the future of MDMA-assisted therapy and psychedelics and are bound to open the gates to further legalization, normalization, and patient access. MAPS aims to commercialize the treatment soon, a milestone few had dreamed of prior to these trials. It’s even estimated that psychedelics will be available and free via the NHS in the UK by 2030, ushering in a new era for mental health treatment.

More broadly, the future of MDMA psychedelic research is likely to be characterized by ongoing exploration of the therapeutic potential of the drug, as well as efforts to better understand its mechanisms of action and potential risks.

As the field evolves, the future of research in MDMA-assisted therapy is likely to focus on several key areas, including:

Continued exploration of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD and other mental health conditions. As research on the efficacy and safety of MDMA therapy continues to accumulate, there will likely be more studies aimed at expanding its use to other mental health conditions, such as anxiety, addiction, and depression.

Investigation of the neurobiological mechanisms of MDMA. Researchers will continue to explore how MDMA affects the brain and how it can be used to treat mental health conditions. This may involve studies on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of MDMA action, as well as investigations into the long-term effects of the drug on the brain.

Development of new treatment protocols. As researchers learn more about the optimal conditions for MDMA-assisted therapy, they may develop new treatment protocols that are tailored to specific patient populations or that incorporate different therapeutic approaches for use in psychiatry.

Assessment of the risks and benefits of MDMA. While early studies have shown promising results for MDMA-assisted therapy, more research is needed to fully understand the risks and benefits of the treatment. Researchers will likely continue to study the potential long-term effects of MDMA on the brain and body, as well as potential interactions with other medications and substances.

Final Thoughts on MDMA Therapy

Now that MDMA-assisted therapy is so close to approval, the outlook for people with severe PTSD, treatment-resistant depression, and other seriously challenging mental health issues is brighter. Where before it seemed like there were few, if any, options, a faster, more promising choice may be on the horizon.

An Introduction to Psilocybin

Psilocybin is found naturally in mushrooms, also known as magic mushrooms, shrooms, blue meanies, mushies, liberty caps, liberties, golden tops, philosopher’s stones, amani, and agaric, are fungi that contain psilocybin. Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound that can generate mystical-feeling experiences and powerful hallucinations along with other effects.

With over 180 species of mushrooms in existence that contain either psilocybin or psilocin, its derivative, this fungi is one of the most commonly used and popular psychedelics in the world. Psilocybin-containing mushrooms have a rich tradition of use in Mesoamerican religious and spiritual rituals, and today that type of use extends to other parts of the world and beyond use as a sacrament and mind-altering drug.

Psilocybin is also used in therapeutic settings to treat various disorders and ailments, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, cluster headaches, addiction, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and possibly other issues. However, despite promising research results and an ongoing trend toward decriminalization, psilocybin remain categorized as a Schedule I controlled substance, illegal at the federal level in the US.

Recently, though, we’ve seen a hopeful development: several small, well-controlled studies on the potential for medical and psychiatric use of psilocybin in humans have been allowed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). The process of drug development and review in the context of psilocybin may also be accelerated given the FDA has designated psilocybin a “breakthrough therapy” for depression.

What is Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms)?

Psilocybin (4-phosphoryloxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine) and psilocin (also known as 4-HO-DMT, 4-hydroxy DMT, psilocyn, psilocine, or psilotsin) are the active chemical compounds that lend hallucinogenic qualities to certain species of mushrooms found in South America, Mexico, and parts of the United States. There are over 180 of these psilocybin- or psilocin-containing species of mushrooms.

Psilocybin is an indole-alkylamine (tryptamine). Psilocin is a serotonergic psychedelic substance and a substituted tryptamine alkaloid.

These compounds are structurally similar to lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and it is probably their action on central nervous system serotonin (5-HT) receptors that produce the “trip” of psychedelic, hallucinogenic, and euphoric effects. In fact, street psilocybin is sometimes actually LSD-laced species of non-psychedelic mushrooms.

Hallucinogenic mushrooms, like mescaline or peyote, have been used for centuries in religious rites. However, today both psilocybin and psilocin can be produced synthetically in a lab.

The Psilocybin Experience: What To Expect

Various factors, including dose, setting, mindset, and individual differences in body chemistry, contribute to the psilocybin experience. This means there’s no way to predict precise results and each individual journey is unique to the time, place, and person. However, being well-prepared and knowing what to expect from psilocybin will help you understand basically what’s coming.

Typically, people eat psilocybin mushrooms in their whole, dried form, although they don’t taste good. This causes people to take different steps to mask the flavor, such as putting them in something like peanut butter to disguise the flavor, blending them into a smoothie or juice, brewing them into a tea, or grinding them into powder for capsules.

Each of these delivery methods has slightly different results. For example, just as with other forms of edibles, eating psilocybin-containing mushrooms in food or swallowing them in capsules means it’ll take more time to feel the effects than it will if you drink a mushroom tea, especially if you hold it in your mouth.

The stages of a psychedelic mushroom trip include ingestion, onset, the peak or trip, and the comedown. Each stage is unique and has its own traits and observations, but the most intense psychological and sensory shifts come during the peak. This usually occurs within a couple of hours of ingestion, so it’s good to be ready for it—but at every phase, remember there is nothing to fear and what you’re experiencing is temporary.

A standard psychedelic experience on a moderate dose of psilocybin (via shrooms)—which is about 1 to 2.5 grams—produces a state in the brain that is similar to dreaming, according to neurological imaging studies. This state includes “hypnagogic experiences,” a form of altered psychological functioning common to the transition stage between sleep and wakefulness that’s similar to dreaming while awake; more intense emotional experiences; and increased introspection.

A psilocybin experience can produce a distorted sense of time and other perceptual changes, emotional shifts, more vivid colors, and synesthesia. You may also experience perceptual changes such as tracers, geometric patterns with closed eyes, halos around lights and other objects, and other distorted vision and visuals. The feeling that the whole world around you is alive and breathing is also common.

The psilocybin trip can also alter emotions and thoughts, creating a sense of openness to ideas, feelings, and thoughts that you typically avoid. It can produce a sense of delight and wonder and a sense of peace and connection with your own mind, the people in your life, and the world around you.

It is common to experience strong emotions of all kinds during a psilocybin experience, both challenging and wonderful. When negative feelings come, don’t fight them. Experience them and allow them to run their course without resistance.

Resisting negative emotions can cause a “bad trip.” Many users who report strong negative emotions also report feeling relatively detached and calm, particularly if they remember the emotions won’t last and don’t resist them.

The physical side effects of a psilocybin experience vary individually, but they might include arousal, dilated pupils, changes in blood pressure and heart rate, increased tendon reflexes, nausea, restlessness or relaxation depending on the person, tremors, and difficulties coordinating movement. Some research indicates that psilocybin can cause headaches in some people, but never severe headaches; in fact, psilocybin can treat cluster headaches.

Bad Trips

If you are interested in trying psilocybin or just curious about them, you are probably also curious about the infamous “bad trip.” This is a serious topic for anyone trying psilocybin for the first time. A bad trip can involve uncontrollable paranoia, wild and scary hallucinations, and out of control, reckless behaviors as a result.

However, you can minimize any risks associated with a psilocybin experience by following the psychedelic experience 6Ss: set, setting, substance, sitter, session, and situation. Make sure you have the right mindset or set, in a safe, comfortable setting, with a safe substance, a responsible and knowledgeable sitter, and that after the session you integrate the experience into your own situation.

Also, for your own sake, just ignore all of those pop culture portrayals of bad trips you’ve seen. Actors freaking out on camera are definitely not the same, and these scenes make bad trips seem both more out of your control and more common than they really are. In reality, users manage most bad trips without pharmaceutical intervention and with interpersonal support.

Psilocybin is the active ingredient that makes psychedelic mushrooms…psychedelic. Typically, the lowest dose of dried mushrooms for feeling the effects of psilocybin is in the range of 0.2 to 0.5 grams, although this varies from person to person. Effects from a moderate 1 to 2.5 gram dose taken orally typically last from three to six hours.

But while psilocybin might get a lot of weird press and “bad trip” portrayals in the movies, it is actually about 10 times less potent than mescaline and about 100 times less potent than LSD.

The human body metabolizes psilocybin into psilocin, and both produce these psychedelic effects that mushrooms are famous for. In the brain, psilocybin and psilocin interact primarily with serotonin receptors.

In research on rodents, psilocybin interacts strongly with receptors in brain hub regions responsible for integrating sensory experiences. This may be why people report altered sensory experiences and effects such as synesthesia—the experience of tasting sounds, hearing colors, or other mixed sensory modalities—while using mushrooms.

Psilocybin Effects by Dose

Remember, psilocybin effects can and do vary significantly, especially at the lower ranges and doses. Furthermore, as laws change and more data becomes available, these notions may change.

Note: Dose ranges are for Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms. Although certain species, such as P. semilanceata, may on average be more potent, many users still apply this reference loosely to other psilocybin-containing species.

You don’t feel a true microdose, but with a mini-dose of psilocybin, you start into that level of feeling effects. With the mini-dose you breach the perceptual threshold and feel and experience effects around you, yet stay grounded and connected to your surroundings.

Although a museum dose still won’t give you a full psychedelic experience, the effects from its psilocybin are much more obvious than with a min-dose. Dr. Alexander Shulgin, a pharmacologist and biochemist, created the term “museum dose,” to refer to the idea that this dose allows users to experience notable psychedelic effects—such as those that might enhance viewing paintings in a museum—while still participating in public life in relatively normal ways without attracting too much attention, as you need to do to make the museum plan work.

Benefits and Risks of Psilocybin

Like any other substance consumed to alter the mind, there are many potential benefits and risks to consuming psilocybin mushrooms. Here is what we know.

Potentials Benefits

Many historical cultures have used psychedelic mushrooms for healing and cultural and social change. Today, people are beginning to recognize the benefits of these interesting fungi.

Research into psilocybin are being conducted across the United States and abroad, and evidence is strong that they are indeed drivers of personal growth. One study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found enduring increases in quality of life and decreases in anxiety and depressed mood to be among the benefits of a single dose of psilocybin, even among patients with life-threatening cancer diagnoses.

Research also suggests that psilocybin may also be effective because it affects the brain’s neuroplasticity, or ability to change, grow, and learn.

Well-known Risks

Despite what you may have seen in the movies, psilocybin is among the safest psychoactive substances. According to the 2017 Global Drug Survey, only 0.2 percent of all psilocybin users worldwide in 2016 needed emergency medical treatment, making psilocybin mushrooms among the safest of all recreational drugs available. That rate is far lower than for LSD, MDMA, and cocaine. Furthermore, even if you have a bad trip, there’s no known lethal dose, meaning that you’re unlikely to overdose—and psilocybin is non-addictive.

Of course, there is inherent risk in taking any drug. Toward the beginning and middle of a trip, psilocybin can trigger unpleasant physical side effects, such as perspiration, numbing, nausea, and tremors. It can also produce uncomfortable mental and emotional effects, such as mood swings, paranoia, anxiety, and panic attacks.

One survey found that up to 33 percent of respondents who had taken mushrooms experienced paranoia and anxiety at some point during their trip. However, long-term psychological and/or physical effects are rare, and are typically linked to latent psychological disorders, not the mushrooms themselves, when they do occur.

One suite of side effects, called Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD), is unique to psychedelics and is what users commonly experience as “flashbacks.” Unlike the flashbacks of PTSD, however, HPPD perceptual changes or flashbacks occur following the use of psilocybin (or other psychedelics). HPPD is considered a rare disorder although its exact prevalence is unknown, and it is not associated with any permanent neurological damage or physical changes.

Therapeutic Uses and Clinical Studies for Psilocybin

For an in-depth look at psilocybin therapy, see our entry on Psilocybin Therapy. But in brief:

Psilocybin has been used ritually for hundreds of years, but modern medicine is now catching on, too. Since the 1960s and 1970s in particular, psilocybin research has suggested that psychedelic mushrooms might play a promising role in the treatment of mood disorders such as anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); addiction including alcohol, opiates, and tobacco; cluster headaches; and a wide variety of other disorders.

However, in the 1970s the federal government reclassified psilocybin as a Schedule I drug. This focus on substance abuse rather than medicine chilled research into its therapeutic effects. The more recent third wave of interest into psychedelics has finally captured the attention of medical professionals—and regulators—as anecdotal evidence of psilocybin’s therapeutic effects becomes more mainstream. Today, many respected organizations fund this kind of research, including The Beckley Foundation, MAPS, and The Johns Hopkins University Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research.

Psilocybin and Personal Growth

Responsible use of psilocybin mushrooms to intentionally foster personal growth is a long-term trend. under supportive conditions, healthy adults in early trials reported lasting beneficial changes from psychedelics, including to attitudes, behaviors, personality, and values.
Of course these nascent research findings are supported by numerous anecdotal reports over the years. People frequently report increased imagination and creativity, more tolerance for others, and a greater appreciation of art, music, and the outdoors after a psilocybin experience.

A 2011 study reported that 14 months after a single psilocybin experience, users’ levels of openness remained significantly elevated according to self-reported measures. Researchers in that study and others attribute the lasting nature of these changes to the mystical experience aspect of the psilocybin mushroom trip.

A mystical experience is generally understood as feelings of interconnectedness and unity with all beings and things, feelings of joy and peace, ineffability, a sense of sacredness and of transcending normal space and time, and an intuitive idea that the the nature of reality is being revealed in the experience, which is a source of objective truth. But psilocybin-induced mystical experiences are not reserved for the religious. With people who have reported having profound mystical experiences during a mushroom trip there doesn’t seem to be a correlation between the depth of experience and religious belief—only between the amount of positive, long-term changes a person experiences and the intensity of their mystical experience.

These feelings of interconnectedness and other subjective effects are probably caused by the ability of psilocybin to decrease interconnectivity between the brain’s integration hubs and increase cross-talk between regions of the brain that typically remain segregated. Scientists think that this may produce a more flexible, unconstrained state of cognition, allowing us to think far outside the box.

The brain produces similar activity patterns during various states of meditation. Researchers have also found that psilocybin can produce lasting increases in trait-level prosocial behaviors and attitudes and in healthy psychological functioning.

Microdosing Psilocybin

Microdosing is the consumption of unnoticeable or sub-perceptual amounts of any mind-altering substance or psychedelic compound. Psilocybin mushrooms are ideal for microdosing, and many enthusiasts report higher energy levels, more creativity, improved relational skills, increased focus, and reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. Some users also find that microdosing psilocybin helps them enhance their sensory perception and heighten their spiritual awareness.

Of course modern interest in psychedelics spans the 20th and 21st centuries, but the book, The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys by Dr. James Fadiman fueled new interest in microdosing starting in 2011. It was this book that brought the term microdosing into the mainstream.

Legality of Psilocybin

The legality of psilocybin is a little tricky, and may change depending on where you are and whether you’re buying psilocybin mushrooms or trying to grow or harvest them.

Buying Psilocybin

In most countries, psilocybin is and has been illegal for decades. But in some regions, such as the Netherlands, the British Virgin Islands, Brazil, and Jamaica, psilocybin in some form falls into a legal grey area or even a loophole.

In November 2020, Oregon decriminalized the use or possession of psilocybin mushrooms for medical reasons and legalized psilocybin for people aged 21 and older. Psilocybin is also decriminalized for personal possession and use for adults aged 21 and older in Santa Cruz and Oakland, California; Denver, Colorado; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Somerville, Massachusetts; and Washington, DC.

Growing and Harvesting Psilocybin via Mushrooms

Psilocybin remains illegal in the US at the federal level, but in 2005 the state of New Mexico deemed psilocybin mushrooms—as long as they are undried—legal to possess and grow. New Mexico remains alone in this stance since the Florida state legislature overruled a 1978 Florida supreme court ruling that essentially legalized harvesting wild psilocybin mushrooms. Today, harvesting wild psilocybin mushrooms is largely unregulated across the US, although possessing the fungi alone is enough trouble in most locations.

Surprisingly, except for Georgia, California, and Idaho, it is perfectly legal to possess psilocybin mushroom spores in the US, because the spores themselves don’t contain the chemicals federal law specifically regulates under schedule I: psilocybin and psilocin. Of course, you can’t use the spores to grow the psilocybin mushrooms—but that’s another story.

History of Psilocybin Use

The Sahara Desert has revealed archaeological evidence of humans using psychedelic mushrooms at least 7,000 years ago, and prehistoric art images of these mushrooms span the globe.

Psilocybe hispanica was depicted in prehistoric rock art in Spain near Villar del Humo, indicating that approximately 6,000 years ago people in the area were using psychedelic mushrooms in religious rituals.

From pre-Columbian days to modern times, the native peoples of Mesoamerica have a history of use of the hallucinogenic species of the Psilocybe genus for divination, religious communion, and healing. Typically, the fungi are used to celebrate rites of passage, and recognized as religious symbols.

In Guatemala and other parts of Central America, travelers well through the time of Hernán Cortés observed mushroom motifs and stones in locations where religious rituals were undertaken. Once the Spanish and the Catholic missionaries came to Central America, together they campaigned against and suppressed the use of hallucinogenic plants and mushrooms along with the rest of the cultural tradition of the Aztecs and other pre-Christian traditions. However, there remain many accounts of psilocybin use among the pre-Columbian Aztec and Mayan cultures of Guatemala and Mexico.

The London Medical and Physical Journal made the first mention of hallucinogenic mushrooms in European medicinal literature in 1799 when it related the tale of a man who unwittingly served his whole family a breakfast of Psilocybe semilanceata mushrooms he picked in Green Park, London. The treating physician described the youngest child experiencing fits of laughter that he could not restrain, even when his parents threatened him.

Gordon Wasson, who formerly led J.P. Morgan & Company as vice president, had an intense obsession with psilocybin mushrooms. In 1955, he and his wife Valentina Pavlovna Wasson traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, to meet Maria Sabina, a mushroom shaman and part of the indigenous Mazatec tribe. There, taking their first mushroom trip, the Wassons became the first European Americans ever known to actively take part in a psilocybin mushroom ceremony. The Wassons essentially began the modern Western psychedelic mushroom movement when, in 1957, they published their experiences in a photo essay in Time Magazine, “Seeking the Magic Mushroom,” in which Mr. Wasson reported feeling like his soul had left his body.

The Wassons also brought back a sample of Psilocybe mexicana, a psychoactive mushroom, from Mexico. In 1956 Roger Heim identified the species, and in 1957, Albert Hofmann, the well-known Swiss chemist and originator of LSD, isolated psilocybin in the lab for the first time from the samples. Psilocybin was produced synthetically one year later for the first time.

Timothy Leary was inspired by the Wassons’ Life article to travel to Mexico and experience psilocybin mushrooms himself. In 1960 he returned to Harvard and founded the Harvard Psilocybin Project with Richard Alpert to promote the study of the psychological and religious aspects of psychedelic drug use, including psilocybin.

Throughout the 1960s, Alpert and Leary worked with prisoners to test the effects of psilocybin on recidivism. Their work revealed that six months after treatment, the recidivism rate had decreased below 40 percent, beyond expectations. Alongside other controversial experiments, the research caused problems for the pair, who Harvard dismissed in 1963. Alpert and Leary went on to fuel interest in the hippie counterculture in psychedelic experiences.

According to the UN’s Convention on Psychotropic Substances, since 1971, the US has listed psilocybin as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it is illegal within our borders for all uses and is considered to have high potential for drug abuse—with the exceptions we listed above. Because psilocybin mushrooms were not part of the UN convention itself, though, all signatory countries such as the US can regulate psilocybin as they choose since the convention is basically a treaty. However, as explained above, in most countries today psilocybin is illegal, although there are exceptions.

Some people believe that ancestors of humans did use mushrooms, and that their psychedelic experience might have shaped prehistoric culture, including spiritual beliefs, arts, and even the underlying social values that regulated life. The more extreme version of this idea include the “Stoned Ape Hypothesis” from psychonaut and ethnobotanist Terence McKenna, which suggests that among the benefits of early humans using psychedelic mushrooms were the very intellectual advancements that led to the evolution of the modern human mind. However, there is a high level of skepticism—mostly due to the lack of evidence in support of it—toward this theory in the scientific community.

Current Use of Psilocybin in Culture and Statistics on Psilocybin Use

Today, groups of Mazatecs, Mixe, Mixtecs, Nahua, Zapotecs, and others from central Mexico to Oaxaca continue to report psilocybin mushroom use. But use is at least as widespread among Westerners, with people ages 34 and younger choosing psilocybin among psychedelics the most frequently. One 2012 study found that almost 30 percent of 409 northeastern US university students had tried psilocybin-containing mushrooms at least once.

The 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) collected and analyzed data on how people use psychedelics—a category which includes not only psilocybin-containing mushrooms, but also LSD, MDMA, mescaline, PCP, and peyote—compared to other drugs, including prescription antidepressants and antipsychotics. A report on the data shows that about 1.2 percent of the population of people 12 years of age and older used psychedelics within the past month. Interestingly, psychotherapeutics such as prescription antipsychotics are used illegally far more often than are psychedelics.

Surveys of people aged 15 to 24 in 12 EU member states found that less than 1 to 8 percent of young people had taken psilocybin. In the UK in 2004/2005, the final year before they were completely illegal, nearly 340,000 people ages 16 to 59 had used psilocybin mushrooms.

Types of Psilocybin Mushrooms

Psilocybin as we know it today evolved from ancestor compound muscarine approximately 10 to 20 million years ago. Today psilocybin is present on every continent except Antarctica in about 200 species of Basidiomycota mushrooms in varying concentrations.

In a 2000 review of the global distribution of psilocybin mushrooms, Gastón Guzmán et al found that psilocybin mushrooms are distributed among the Psilocybe, Gymnopilus, Panaeolus, Copelandia, Pluteus, Inocybe, Pholiotina, and Galerina genera with 116, 14, 13, 12, 6, 6, 4, and 1 species, respectively. In 2005, Guzmán et all increased their estimate of the number of psilocybin mushrooms to 144 species.

Over 50 species of them occur in Latin America, the world’s hotspot for psilocybin mushrooms, with dozens sprinkled throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, and still other varieties found in Africa and Australia and the Pacific Islands. Typically, species containing psilocybin are gilled, dark-spored mushrooms that are found in woods and meadows and thrive in the tropics and subtropics—generally in soil that is rich in plant debris and humus. Most species occur in humid, subtropical forests.

In tropical areas, P. cubensis is the most common psilocybin mushroom, while P. semilanceata predominates in more temperate regions. In fact, this ability to thrive throughout North America, Europe, South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, has made P. semilanceata the most widely distributed psilocybin mushroom in the world, although ironically it cannot be found in Mexico.

Of the more than 180 known species of mushrooms with psychedelic benefits, these are the most widely consumed types:

Psilocybe cubensis: The most widely cultivated and well-known psilocybin mushroom—the default version, when you think of “shrooms,” this is probably it in a classic sense.

[See our complete reference on Psilocybe cubensis here.]

Psilocybe semilanceata: The most widespread species of psychedelic mushroom in the world.

Psilocybe cyanescens: Less famous than either psilocybe cubensis or psilocybe semilanceata, but more cultivated than in the past, particularly because they are slightly more psychoactive.

Psilocybe azurescens: Probably the world’s most potent psilocybin mushroom, discovered in the mid-1990s by world-renowned mycologist Paul Stamets.

Amanita Muscaria (Fly Agaric): This famous-looking red and white mushroom was used regularly in Siberian and Baltic shamanic traditions and contains the psychoactive compounds muscimol and ibotenic acid.

How to Identify Psychedelic Mushrooms

Warning: No matter what your goal is, when you’re trying to identify ANY kind of mushroom, use extreme caution. Many varieties of mushrooms look very similar to each other, yet they exhibit varying levels of toxicity, and often only fungi hunters who are very well-trained can differentiate between species. It’s highly unlikely to select a deadly species if you know what to look for, but misidentified mushrooms can cause illness or even death.

Regular old dried mushrooms are dirty brown with patches of lighter colors, typically. Psilocybin mushrooms look like ordinary dried mushrooms, but usually with whitish-gray stems that are more slender and longer and dark brown caps that are lighter in the middle.

In tropical zones globally, Psilocybe cubensis grows in abundance. These classic-looking parasol-shaped, stubby-stemmed mushrooms feature mostly light golden-brown caps. Before fruiting the caps are bulbous, but once they reach maturity they appear wider and flatter.

Another variety eager psilocybin fans often spot is Psilocybe azurescens, which is endemic to the United States along the West Coast. This variety appears more convex and slimmer.

In some places you can find liquid psilocybin, usually presented as a small vial of clear brown liquid.

How to Grow Psychedelic Psilocybin Mushrooms

Disclaimer: Remember, it is usually illegal to grow psilocybin mushrooms for any reason, including for consumption. We do not support, condone, or encourage any illegal activity.

Growing psilocybin mushrooms yourself eliminates the risks from the potentially dangerous practice of collecting and misidentifying mushrooms in the wild. It also enables an interesting hobby and a stable supply of psilocybin all year long.

It is almost always best to start from scratch, although you can find ready-made mushroom kits online. Whether you buy a kit that includes it or you make your own, you’ll start with a living mycelium substrate, the underlying material mushrooms grow in. Making your own is less likely to suffer from contamination, and is more consistent.

Myths and Facts About Psilocybin

Myth: Psilocybin-containing mushrooms cause brain bleeds, kidney failure, stomach bleeding, and/or other serious health risks.

Facts: A brain bleed is technically a hemorrhage, stroke, or aneurysm. There is no evidence of any link between ingesting mushrooms containing psilocybin and hemorrhage, stroke, or aneurysm.

No mushrooms containing psilocybin cause kidney problems, but incompetent mushroom identification can. The mushrooms in the family Cortinarius closely resemble the psychedelic species of mushroom Psilocybe semilanceata, and while the latter does not hurt the kidneys, the former are harmful to the kidneys.

There is no evidence to suggest that psilocybin mushrooms cause stomach bleeding.

Myth: Shrooms cause insanity or can trigger a psychotic break.

Facts: Although scientists have seen similarities between trips caused by psilocybin and the psychotic episodes you might see in a disorder such as schizophrenia, they also note that the effects of psilocybin are temporary and that users return to normal within hours. This is true even among people admitted to the emergency room after taking psilocybin mushrooms. In fact, a recent population-wide study of those who use classic psychedelics such as LDS and psilocybin found a reduced likelihood of suicidality and other psychological distress.

Myth: Psilocybin mushrooms are toxic or poisonous.

Facts: Psilocybin mushrooms can alter the consciousness and intoxicate, but based on that they are not any more poisonous than caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, or cannabis. Actual psilocybin mushrooms do not cause mushroom poisoning. Certain non-psychedelic species are in fact poisonous mushrooms, but these are not psilocybin mushrooms.

Psilocybin (and Psilocybin-Containing Mushrooms FAQ

Can a drug test detect psilocybin?

Most standard drug screens do not include psilocybin and related metabolites, but they are sometimes included in extended drug screens.

Can using psilocybin cause emotional harm or psychological trauma?

Using psilocybin will not cause emotional harm or psychological trauma for those who follow the 6Ss of psychedelic use. For some people, especially without the 6Ss in place, psilocybin can lead to a “bad trip,” which is a short period of acute psychosis.

To avoid this, stick to the 6S rules for psychedelics:

Get Set with the right mindset by focusing on your intentions and goals

Choose a safe, comfortable Setting

Use a safe, reliable Substance in the right dose

Trust only a Sitter or guide you trust to get you through the experience

Understand the stages of a psychedelic Session, including ingestion, onset, opening up and letting go, plateau, gentle come down, and the end of the session

Integrate your experiences into your existing Situation

Anyone with a family history of mental illness should also avoid taking psychedelics. This is because some researchers think that psilocybin may trigger latent mental health issues—although there is no concrete evidence to support that.

How can I be sure these mushrooms contain psilocybin?

There are many species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms, and some look eerily similar to mushrooms that are poisonous, so be careful to correctly identify your mushrooms. Only purchase mushrooms from a trusted source. Recognize many varieties of psilocybe mushrooms by their short cone-like caps and long, thin stems.

Is it legal to grow psilocybin mushrooms for medical use?

As we discussed above, it is illegal to grow, buy, or possess psilocybin-containing mushrooms in most places in the world. However, it is legal to buy and possess the spores in many places—just don’t let them grow.

How do I take psilocybin via mushrooms?

You can eat psilocybin-containing mushrooms whole, disguised or cooked into food, or brewed in a tea. Weigh a moderate dose of 1 to 2.5 grams on a scale.

How do I microdose with psilocybin?

Although everyone’s tolerance is different, typically psilocybin can be microdosed at a dose of about 0.1 to 0.3 grams.

Does psilocybin tolerance exist? How does it work?

Wait at least three days between doses of psilocybin doses, because even a moderate dose of psilocybin produces immediate tolerance. Taking it again will generate a weaker effect.

Can I mix psilocybin with other drugs?

In general, avoid mixing psilocybin with other substances. Avoid mixing psilocybin with amphetamines, cannabis, or cocaine. And never mix psilocybin and Tramadol, which can cause serotonin syndrome.

Final Thoughts on Psilocybin

We hope this detailed guide to psilocybin-containing mushrooms has been useful. The increasing popularity of “shrooms” and other hallucinogenic drugs is bringing this amazing substance into the mainstream, so we expect more and more people to be curious and seek out this information.

Disclaimer: Depending on where you are in the world, psilocybin is a potentially illegal substance. We do not condone or encourage the use of any illegal substance. However, information is imperative to responsible harm reduction and illegal drug use occurs. This guide is intended to offer accurate information to ensure the safety of anyone who chooses to use this substance.

Just to look at, you might not connect “magic mushrooms” and Psilocybe cubensis. These little brown-and-white mushrooms don’t look especially magical, and might remind you more of having to eat your veggies than anything else. But even a single dose of P. cubensis can be life-changing.

Often called magic mushrooms, shrooms, cubes, golden halos, or gold caps, Psilocybe cubensis belongs to the fungus family Hymenogastraceae. First known as Stropharia cubensis but later renamed, Psilocybe cubensis is the best known psilocybin mushroom today, thanks mostly to its wide distribution and ease of cultivation.

If at some point in your torrid past you ate some random shrooms, not knowing what they were, chances are excellent they were some strain of Psilocybe cubensis. That’s because since the 1970s, Psilocybe cubensis or “cubes” have been widely understood to be the easiest magic mushroom to cultivate indoors, thanks to a few key books on hobby growing, including Psilocybin: The Magic Mushroom Grower’s Guide by Terence and Dennis McKenna.

In fact, although there is a dearth of clinical data on how these strains differ in terms of how they treat mental health conditions, there are now over 60 different strains of P. cubensis due to decades of selective home breeding. Amazonian, B+, Golden Teachers, Pink Buffalo, and even Penis Envy Mushrooms can now all be yours—yet they’re all P. cubensis.

In fact, Psilocybe cubensis is one of more than 100 species of mushrooms that contain psilocybin and psilocin, the main active chemical compounds that produce psychoactive trippy symptoms such as hallucinations and euphoria. And despite ongoing stigma in the United States legal system and beyond, which keeps psilocybin mushrooms including Psilocybe cubensis part of the black market for drugs, a controlled substance, generations of religious and cultural heritage in Central America have relied upon these “magic mushrooms.”

Overview: Psilocybe Cubensis vs Other Psilocybin Mushrooms

Psilocybin mushrooms are also sometimes called shrooms, magic mushrooms, blue meanies, golden tops, mushies, liberty caps, liberties, philosopher’s stones, amani, and agaric. There are many species of fungi that contain psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic compound that can generate powerful effects such as hallucinations and mystical-feeling experiences.

Any one of these species might be called magic mushrooms or psilocybin mushrooms. In fact, psilocybin mushrooms are among the world’s most popular and frequently used psychedelics—and with over 180 species of mushrooms that naturally contain either psilocybin or psilocin, that’s no surprise.

The ancestor of what we know as psilocybin today was the compound muscarine. This existed approximately 10 to 20 million years ago, and gave rise to modern psilocybin. Today, psilocybin exists in hundreds of species to varying degrees on every continent except Antarctica.

In a 2000 review, updated in 2005, Gastón Guzmán et al detailed the global distribution of psilocybin mushrooms. This team found approximately 144 species of psilocybin mushrooms.

Typically, psilocybin-containing species are gilled, dark-spored mushrooms. They generally thrive in soil that is rich in plant debris and humus and can be found in tropical and subtropical woods and meadows. Most species occur in subtropical, humid forests.

Over 50 of these species occur in the world’s hotspot for psilocybin mushrooms: Latin America. In tropical areas, P. cubensis is the most common psilocybin mushroom, and synonymous with “magic mushrooms.” The most widely cultivated and well-known psilocybin mushroom—the default version, when you think of “shrooms,” this is probably it in a classic sense.

Psilocybe cubensis thrives throughout the southern United States and Mexico, and into Central and South America. P. cubensis also grows in Australia, India, Cuba, and Southeast Asia, and prefers to live on dung and well-manured land in nature.

Although in many regions of the world, many strains of P. cubensis can be found growing in the wild, typically the indoor-grown types are more potent. This is because indoor psilocybin mushrooms are grown in substrates selected to enhance potency and themselves bred for strength. This is among the reasons that the mushrooms purchased underground are typically more potent than those found in nature; the human hand does guide the final product.

The color of Psilocybe cubensis, like all Psilocybes, depends on its hydration level. P. cubensis can also turn a bluish color when exposed to oxygen by being handled; this is caused by psilocin oxidizing. Cubensis stands apart from other Psilocybe species in the way its cap widens as it matures and based on its relatively large size.

In fact, Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World, the world-famous mushroom identification guide created by mycologist Paul Stamets, describes P. cubensis as “the most majestic of the Psilocybes” based on their golden color and recognizable size. Psilocybe cubensis is, overall, the most widely used and famous psychedelic mushroom.

Taxonomy and Naming of Psilocybe Cubensis

Franklin Sumner Earle, an American mycologist, was first to describe Psilocybe cubensis in 1906. At that time Earle was working in Cuba and called the mushroom Stropharia cubensis. Just the next year, Narcisse Théophile Patouillard, a French mycologist and pharmacist identified Psilocybe cubensis as Naematoloma caerulescens while working in Tonkin—what is today northern Vietnam.

Years later in 1941 William Alphonso Murrill found Psilocybe cubensis near Gainesville in Florida and called it Stropharia cyanescens. In 1949, Rolf Singer, a German-born mycologist, renamed the species Psilocybe cubensis, moving it out of the Strophariaceae family and into the genus Psilocybe. Singer also divided P. cubensis into three varieties: the brownish capped Psilocybe cubensis, the yellowish capped var caeurulascens of Asia, and the pale capped Murrill’s cyanescens of Florida.

The name Psilocybe means “bare head” based on the bald-headed look of the mushrooms. Derived from the Ancient Greek psilos (ψιλος) for “bare” and kubê (κυβη) for “head.” Cubensis refers to where Earle published the account, and means “coming from Cuba.” The various street names and other synonyms for the species Psilocybe cubensis such as “cubes” came later as psychedelics became more popular.

In Australia, Psilocybe cubensis is frequently called gold cap, golden top or gold top, and in the United States and Mexico, you’re more likely to hear it called Palenque or San Ysidro mushroom with the phrase “magic mushroom” being more of a catchall for hallucinogenic or psychedelic mushrooms in general.

In Tagalog, spoken in Thailand, you might hear “Hed keequai,” which basically references a mushroom that water buffalo poop out. Mushrooms from the order Agaricales such as Panaeolus fall into this category. While they have similar properties to P. cubensis, they are technically a separate type.

How to Identify Psilocybe Cubensis: Appearance and Description

Around the world in tropical regions, Psilocybe cubensis grows naturally in abundance. These classic-looking mushrooms are stubby-stemmed and umbrella-shaped. Their mostly light golden-brown caps are fatter before fruiting, getting flatter and wider at maturity.

The cap of the Psilocybe cubensis ranges in size from 1.6 to 8 centimeters or 0.6 to 3.1 inches in diameter. When the mushroom is younger, the cap features a central papilla and is conic to convex. As it ages, the cap becomes broadly convex to plane, retaining a slight raised area or umbo in the middle of the cap, sometimes with a ring-shaped depression around it.

The surface of the Psilocybe cubensis cap is sticky and smooth, with some specimens retaining attached white universal veil remnants. Younger caps are brown at the center and pale to nearly white toward the edges. With age, caps fade to more yellowish, golden-brown tones.

All parts of the Psilocybe cubensis stain blue when bruised. Its gills are grey and narrow, and may or may not be completely or partially attached, adnate to adnexed. The gills can become mottled with age and darken to purplish-black, though they tend to remain whitish at the edges.

The stipe is white and hollow, yellowing as it ages, and is about 4 to 15 centimeters or 2 to 6 inches high and 0.4 to 1.4 centimeters or 0.2 to 0.6 inches thick.

Range, Distribution, and Habitat of Psilocybe Cubensis

A pan-tropical species, Psilocybe cubensis occurs naturally in the wild in the southeastern US and Gulf Coast states and Hawaii; Mexico; Australia (including Tasmania), Fiji, and New Zealand; Central America including Costa Rica, Belize, and Guatemala; the Caribbean including the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Martinique, Guadalupe, and Trinidad; South America including Bolivia, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and French Guiana; and Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and possibly Nepal.

In the US, Psilocybe cubensis is occasionally spotted in the South growing wild, usually below the 35th parallel. Especially in fall and spring, P. cubensis can reliably be found within a few hundred miles of the Gulf Coast, all the way from Florida up north to Tennessee over to Texas.

There is an important relationship between Psilocybe cubensis and whatever type of cattle is locally prevalent, or their dung in particular. In the northern hemisphere, mushrooms appear in dung, rich pasture soil, or sugar cane mulch from February to December—and in the southern hemisphere, November to April.

In Asia, the Psilocybe cubensis spread with water buffalo. As cattle made their way from Kolkata, the Cape of Good Hope, and the American west coast to Australia, P. cubensis colonized the Australian mainland and Tasmania.

Psilocybe cubensis specimens have even been collected in the Wedza District of Zimbabwe’s Mashonaland East province. There, the first known collection of a psilocybin mushroom in Zimbabwe, the sample was collected where both wildlife and cattle make their home, in the Imire Rhino and Wildlife Conservation nature reserve.

Humidity that remains above 85 and the presence of many grass-eating mammals is ideal for Psilocybe cubensis. Cubensis grows readily on these animals’ dung because they have very little or no stomach acid. When they consume mushroom spores, they are allowed to germinate in the warm, moist gut of the animal.

Remember, though, the idea that you should search under cow pies for shrooms—or anything else—let alone consume what you find is urban legend and a bad idea. Along these lines, only experts identifying wild flora should hunt for wild mushrooms of any kind. The worst case scenario, otherwise, is literally fatal.

Wild mushrooms may be poisonous. Notably, species which appear similar to Psilocybe cubensis yet are all potentially deadly include the Pholiotina rugosa, Chlorophyllum molybdites, and mushrooms of the genus Galerina. All of these prefer the habitat P. cubensis thrives in.

Psychedelic Effects and Ethnogenic Benefits of Psilocybe Cubensis

The psychoactive properties of Psilocybe cubensis have been well-understood for some time, at least since Singer noted them in 1949. But as the use of psychedelic mushrooms generally became more popular in the 1960s and 1970s, users slowly began to describe the effects of Psilocybe cubensis in the research as well as popular literature.

Probably the most famous of all psilocybin-containing mushrooms, P. cubensis is frequently ingested to trigger psychedelic experiences. The major psychoactive compounds in Psilocybe cubensis are:

Psilocybin (4-phosphoryloxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine)

Psilocin (4-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine)

Baeocystin (4-phosphoryloxy-N-methyltryptamine)

Norbaeocystin (4-phosphoryloxytryptamine)

In the whole mushroom, liquid chromatography determines that psilocin and psilocybin concentrations range from 0.14 to 0.42 percent and 0.37 to 1.30 percent, respectively. Similarly, in the cap psilocin and psilocybin concentrations range from 0.17 to 0.78 percent and 0.44 to 1.35 percent, respectively.

When determining appropriate doses, individual psychological predisposition and brain chemistry play a significant role. 0.25 to 1 gram of dried Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms ingested orally is usually right for a mild psychedelic effect, with 1 to 2.5 grams typically producing moderate effects, and over 2.5 grams generally delivering powerful effects.

3.5 dried grams or 1/8 of an ounce would be an intensely high dose for most people, although it can be a standard recreational dose among more experienced users. But doses above three grams may be overwhelming for many, so beware. However, there is no evidence of toxicity, even at very high doses.

Occasionally, for the very lucky, full-blown effects like those you get from high, potent doses can come from smaller doses like 0.25 gram—amounts that produce virtually no effects in most people. But if this is you, you’re one of a lucky few.

The psilocybin content and quality of a given sample of Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms will vary due to storage method, age and other factors. Typically, users begin to feel effects after about 20 to 60 minutes depending on stomach contents and method of ingestion.

Depending on the dosage of Psilocybe cubensis, users may experience the animation of organic shapes, a vivid enhancement of colors, walls that seem to breathe, and other visual changes and distortions that may last from four to ten hours. Very high doses of Psilocybe cubensis, depending on grow method, phenotype, and the individual using it, can be overwhelming.

Avoid taking MAOIs with anything containing psilocybin, including Psilocybe cubensis, because the enzyme monoamine oxidase metabolizes psilocybin and psilocin. MAOIs therefore reduce the ability of the body to handle the mushrooms, which has the effect of making them feel more potent. This can in turn produce dangerously strong, prolonged, or unpleasant experiences.

Legality of Psilocybe Cubensis

Psilocybin mushrooms have a rich tradition of use in Mesoamerican religious and spiritual rituals, and today that type of use extends to other parts of the world and beyond use as a sacrament and mind-altering drug.

According to the UN’s Convention on Psychotropic Substances, since 1971, the US has listed psilocybin as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it is illegal within our borders for all uses and is considered to have high potential for drug abuse—with a few exceptions. Because the UN convention itself omitted psilocybin mushrooms, all signatory countries such as the US can regulate psilocybin mushrooms as they choose since the convention is basically a treaty.

For example, in some regions, such as the Netherlands, the British Virgin Islands, Brazil, and Jamaica, psilocybin in some form falls into a legal grey area or even a loophole. In Brazil, Psilocybe cubensis are legal, but it remains illegal to extract psilocybin and psilocin from the mushroom. However, psilocybin mushrooms including Psilocybe cubensis are illegal in most countries today.

It is illegal to grow or possess Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms in the United States, with a few exceptions, although it is legal to buy and possess their spores for purposes of microscopy—just don’t grow anything with them.

What is Psilocybin and How Does it Work in Psilocybe Cubensis (Magic Mushrooms)?

There are over 180 psilocybin- or psilocin-containing species of mushrooms found in Mexico, South America, and parts of the United States. Psilocybin and psilocin are the chemical compounds that work as active ingredients, giving these mushrooms their unique hallucinogenic qualities.

Psilocybin (4-phosphoryloxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine) is a tryptamine, or an indole-alkylamine. Psilocin (also referred to as psilocine, psilocyn, psilotsin, 4-hydroxy DMT, or 4-HO-DMT) is a substituted tryptamine alkaloid and a serotonergic psychedelic substance.

Structurally, these compounds are similar to lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and they probably produce the “trip” of hallucinogenic, psychedelic, and euphoric effects in a similar way, via their action on central nervous system serotonin (5-HT) receptors. Like peyote or mescaline, hallucinogenic mushrooms such as Psilocybe cubensis, have been used in religious rites for centuries.

Interestingly, like some other hallucinogenic drugs, both psilocybin and psilocin can now be synthetically created in a lab. In fact, certain forms of street “psilocybin” or “shrooms” are in fact non-psychedelic mushrooms laced with LSD or synthetics.

And although psilocybin might get a lot of weird press and “bad trip” portrayals in the movies, it is actually about 10 times less potent than mescaline and about 100 times less potent than LSD.

Psilocybe Cubensis Strains

There’s a reason why Psilocybe cubensis is now the most frequently used strain of magic mushrooms in the world.

Even as many strains of mushroom species can’t grow at all unless home growers painstakingly recreate natural settings accurately, P. cubensis positively thrives even under the suboptimal conditions so common to amateur grows. And while more sensitive strains might be damaged or killed as the environment fluctuates slightly, Psilocybe cubensis remains robust in the face of changing conditions.

In fact, experts in mycology now recognize over 60 different strains of P. cubensis psychoactive mushrooms due to decades of selective home breeding including Amazonian, B+, Burma, Chitwan, Columbian Rust, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Golden Teachers, Huautla, Malabar Coast, Mazatapec, Nepal, Penis Envy Mushrooms, PES, PF, and Pink Buffalo.

The Amazonian and B+ and Psilocybe cubensis strains are great choices for novice growers. However, our favorite for noobs is the Golden Teacher strain, which is not only easy to grow, but also wonderful to use—a deservedly popular Psilocybe cubensis strain.

A grower favorite, Golden Teacher mushrooms are relatively easy to cultivate and maintain. With wide caps, long, winding stems, and yellowish color, these magic mushrooms have a distinct appearance.

Golden Teacher Psilocybe cubensis are known for mild to moderate potency and a range of effects such as enhanced colors, euphoria, giddiness, powerful emotions, and visual distortions. Users also report feeling perceptive and spiritually in-tune when taking Golden Teacher Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, which are known for imparting insightful revelations to users.

How to Grow Psilocybe Cubensis

Whether you’re hoping to raise Golden Teacher, Amazonian, Penis Envy, B+, or another strain, you should have great success with a little care and planning. It is possible to grow P. cubensis within two months, typically, as it is among the easiest species to cultivate.

To grow Psilocybe cubensis, use a mushroom growing kit or gather materials ad hoc. In the most basic sense, all that is necessary to grow mushrooms is a hospitable environment for mycelium and a mycelium substrate—something the spores can live and grow on. Cubensis mycelium is the fungus that eventually grows into the edible Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms.

Mushroom growing kits include basically everything you need right in the box, so the mycelium substrate already has what it needs to grow the mushrooms, and you don’t even need spores. However, growing kits also carry potential contamination risks, not to mention inconsistent products and results, and sometimes even products that are totally fake.

You can also grow Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms from scratch using the PF Tek method. This way you inject P. cubensis spores into jars that contain substrate of brown rice flour and vermiculite to cultivate your mycelium. The spores will colonize the substrate and grow into mycelium in about one month. From there, those mycelium cakes can be moved into grow chambers to develop and fruit.

They are ready for harvest after about two weeks. It is necessary to dry Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms before using them, ideally using a dehydrator.

Final Thoughts on Psilocybe Cubensis Mushrooms

As interest in hallucinogens and mushroom use in everything from psychiatry to sex therapy continues to grow, we expect P. cubensis to remain the world’s most popular magic mushroom. Ready to grow your own?

Since the dawn of time, peyote has been part of the religious uses of the indigenous peoples of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. The active ingredient in this small, spineless cactus is the hallucinogen mescaline, itself a fascinating substance.

In this post, we’ll cover:

What peyote is

The origins and history of peyote

Effects of peyote

Legal status of peyote

Alright, let’s get started!

What Is Peyote?

Lophophora williamsii, commonly called peyote, is a small, bulbous spineless cactus that grows mainly in the deserts of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States of America. The peyote cactus is central to the religious rituals of the Native American Church (NAC) and other indigenous groups of North America.

The peyote cactus is among the most recognized psychoactive plants worldwide. It is known by many names, including: cactus pudding, challote, devil root, earth cactus, hikuli, hikuri, mescal button, peote, piote, and whiskey cactus.

Origins of Peyote

The peyote cactus typically grows in chalky, calcareous, or clay soils beneath bushes in groups or clusters. It is a slow-growing plant and only reaches maturity after 15 or 20 years in the wild, although it can be cultivated in 3 to 5 years.

In North America, peyote’s area of distribution ranges between Deming, New Mexico, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Sombrerete, Zacatecas encompassing the Rio Grande valley, the Tamaulipas mountains, the Mezquital river, and the Sierra Madre foothills.

What Does Peyote Look Like?

The peyote cactus is small and blue-green hallucinogenic plant. Unlike many cacti, it lacks spines. The size and shape of peyote vary, some formations reaching up to 20 centimeters in diameter.

Other shapes are more like the classic peyote “buttons” that sometimes sport grayish white hair. The name Lophophora williamsii is based on this fuzzy or hairy characteristic and means “I have tufts.” When peyote flowers, the bloom is light pink.

History of Peyote

Anthropological evidence suggests that people began their use of peyote in pre-Columbian America. Recent carbon-testing studies date dried peyote buttons found in Texas back to 3780 to 3660 BCE. These samples were the oldest botanical samples of psychoactive mescaline ever found.

There is no consensus about which indigenous peoples of northern Mexico were first to use peyote, but later they shared their knowledge and practices with the Huicholes, Coras, and Mexicaneros and the use of peyote in religious ceremony starts to appears in ritual carvings preserved in volcanic rocks dating from that era.

Traditional Use of Peyote

Peyote is still a sacrament various native peoples of Mexico including the Nayeeris (Coras), Wixarika (Huicholes), O’dham (Tepehuanos), Yaquis, Yoemes (Mayos), Raramuris (Tarahumara), Purépechas and Chichimecas. The use of peyote is also sacred in the southern United States among such as the Apaches, Cherokee, Sioux or Lakota, Dinè (Navajos), and others for at least 5,000 years.

Although there has been some conflict in the past (see the legal section below for details), members of the Native American Church (NAC) are now allowed to use peyote under the American Indian Religious Freedom Act.

Peyote and its active component, mescaline, were psychedelic substances mentioned often in Western literature, particularly after mescaline was synthesized in its pure form. Aldous Huxley wrote about mescaline in 1954 in The Doors of Perception, and popularizing its effects.

Chemical Composition and Dosage

Louis Lewin published the first chemical study on peyote in 1888, marking the first time that an article about a psychoactive plant reached publication in the West. Specifically, he wrote about isolating an alkaloid he named anhalonine, which is now known to be a compound of multiple alkaloids.

In 1919 mescaline became the second psychoactive alkaloid isolated from a plant, formally identified as 3,4,5-Trimethoxy-B-Phenethylamine. Over 50 different psychoactive alkaloids have since been isolated from the peyote cactus, alkaloid content makes up about 8% of its dry weight.

Mescaline is a phenylethylamine, a category of substances that are similarly structured to medications such as bronchodilators and antidepressants, catecholamines, such as the neurotransmitters adrenaline and dopamine, and amphetamines such as MDA or MDMA.

Ceremonial users typically ingest 30 to 150 grams of dry, pulverized peyote, or four to twelve peyote buttons, although some participants in certain ceremonies may consume more throughout the night. Sometimes a peyote infusion is prepared containing alkaloids and consumed.

Dosage of Mescaline

A standard dose of oral mescaline is 150 to 700 milligrams. Typical mescaline doses are calculated based on 3.75 mg of mescaline per kg/body weight.

Threshold dose: 100 mg

Low dose: 100 to 200 mg

Average dose: 200 to 300 mg

High dose: 300 to 500 mg

Very high dose: 500 to 700 mg

Effects of Peyote

The small, spineless peyote may appear to be vulnerable to predators in its natural habitat, but its unpleasant taste deters desert animals from consuming it. It is alkaloids that are responsible for this peculiar taste, and many of them have psychoactive properties that cause altered perception in adequate amounts. The best known of the alkaloids and the primary active component of peyote is mescaline.

The onset of effects of peyote is typically two to four hours and the entire experience is sustained for about six additional hours before gradually the experience falls away. The entire experience is usually about 10 to 14 hours.

The effects of peyote and mescaline, its main psychoactive alkaloid, are similar to the standard psychedelic effects you might expect with ayahuasca, LSD, MDMA, psilocybin or magic mushrooms, and DMT.

Peyote induces profoundly altered perception, cognition, and consciousness like these other substances. It can also produce visions with eyes open and closed, an increase in psychological insight, sensory perceptions, spiritual, transcendent experiences, and changes in perception of time and space such as flashbacks.

Peyote is somewhat more stimulating than ayahuasca or psilocybin mushrooms and can change body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. Dilation of pupils and sweating is also possible.

In some rare instances a user might experience a classic “bad trip” complete with disturbing visions and realizations—but this is said to be part of the experience. The strongest hallucinations involve depersonalization, loss of space-time context, and the experience of the presence of the divine.

Legal Status of Peyote

According to the DEA’s peyote “drug use fact sheet”, in the US the use of peyote is banned. This restriction is premised on the notion that psychedelics are not medically useful and that they are ripe for substance abuse—despite ample evidence to the contrary.

Mescaline, the psychoactive alkaloid in peyote, is listed on Schedule I along with cannabis—even though each has solidly recognized medical uses. However, the ingestion of peyote is permitted in ceremonial contexts for members of the Native American Church.

(For a useful breakdown on the different peyote and mescaline laws from place to place, see Erowid’s list.)

Healthcare: Is Peyote Safe?

Physical health

Peyote is known for producing intense experiences and it has slightly stimulating effects, so it should not be combined with other stimulants. Especially for anyone prone to anxiety, or with a history of cardiovascular illness, seek medical advice before using peyote.

However, according to a poison control review of peyote and mescaline exposure cases, even over-exposure is not fatal: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20170392/

For more on the stimulating side effects of mescaline, see this sheet from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Mental health

Anytime one endeavors to use any psychedelic substance, there are three core factors to consider to help reduce the risk: dose, one’s mental readiness, and the setting or context in which it will be used. When you’re taking peyote, consider that it may take hours for the effects to completely appear, so you need a place where you can relax and wait in comfort—and resist taking too much.

Just like any other psychedelic, the effects of peyote and mescaline depend to an important degree on the user’s mental state. Some believe that psychedelics are nonspecific amplifiers of consciousness, meaning that they will amplify whatever your mental state already is. This is why using peyote in situations of depression, stress, or trouble takes a seriously supportive context.

People with a history of psychiatric conditions such as bipolar disorder, psychosis, or suicidal thoughts should refrain from using mescaline outside a clinical context, as there is a risk of decompensation.

Forms of Peyote Use

Users can ingest peyote fresh, of course. Many users dry the plant and pulverize it into powder to consume that way, or to then liquefy with water or mix with fruit or chocolate or something else to hide the taste.

Traditionally, the occasion dictated the manner of consumption. During the Huichol pilgrimage peyote is ingested fresh, after its harvest in a communal ritual after the pilgrimage. In modern Native American Church ceremonies users pulverize the peyote or infuse the buttons in water, and then consume the peyote during all-night ceremonies.

Prevalence of Peyote Use

Although both are relatively well-known, neither mescaline nor peyote are often consumed in Western society. In results from the Global Drug Survey of 2017, it is not even listed among the 40 substances surveyed. This may in part be because the necessary dose of mescaline is comparatively high, and its extraction and synthesis is costly and difficult. It is rare to see synthetic mescaline and peyote is a slow-growing and threatened species (more on this below).

The ceremonial use of peyote within the Native American Church, which has about 250,000 members in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is ongoing. Members of the church recount the peyote origin myth in which the Peyote Woman shows how to experience a personal quest and supernatural encounter with the peyote plant.

There is some evidence that peyote alkaloids help the body release progesterone. Research also indicates that the mescaline in peyote interacts with the body’s serotonin receptors, particularly 5HT2A.

Modern North American Peyote Conservation

The only native peyote habitat in the US spans about 1,250 square miles along the southern border of Texas. Called the peyote gardens, this region has been used for ceremonial reasons by indigenous people for thousands of years.

According to a 1981 US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) memorandum, peyote became incorporated into NAC ritual between 1870 and 1885. This is at the heart of its exemption.

Today, members of the NAC are united by their belief in the “Great Spirit” and the use of peyote is central to the church’s ritual. For this reason, the destruction of the natural habitat of peyote is also burning out one of the largest indigenous religions in the US.

There has been a conservation crisis facing the US peyote population since at least 1995, the year botanist Edward Anderson described his return to the Texas peyote gardens in a paper published in the Cactus and Succulent Journal. 30 years after his original research expedition to the area, Anderson documented a serious tension between Texas landowners and peyoteros.

According to Anderson, the gravest threat to the peyote cactus is not the ceremonial use of peyote buttons. Rather, landowners closing their ranches to peyoteros and engaging in root-plowing, preparing land for cattle grazing by ripping plants up at the root, that threatened the peyote plant’s long-term health.

Reportedly, all of the Texas land where peyote grows is privately owned. Few peyoteros are registered with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as legally able to collect peyote. There are significant barriers to licensing new peyoteros: high amounts of capital and the need for the social connections with landowners. And of course peyote remaining listed as a Schedule I substance with “no currently accepted medical use” furthers the difficulty in both accurately assessing peyote decline and conserving the plant.

Final Thoughts on Peyote

As Western medicine finally seems to stumble into stride with its peers finding value in plant-based therapeutics, hallucinogens are having a moment in the sun. Ideally this will lead to greater understanding and preservation of this sacred tradition.

Times are changing rapidly in the field of psychedelics. Not too long ago, the mere mention of psychedelics was enough to make people uncomfortable, let alone a public discussion about their use or legalization. But now, more and more people are gathering around the idea that psychedelics have the potential to become important tools in our collective mindsets and practices, and that they should be allowed to enter mainstream consciousness. To achieve this monumental goal, there are many who are out in the world, actively working to make this bold vision a reality. Today, we want to take the time to recognize some of the original pioneers of the psychedelic movement, as well as give credit to some of these bold, innovative, and creative individuals that are pushing the psychedelic industry forward.

from researchers and medical professionals like Roland Griffiths and Julie Holland, to entrepreneurs like Paul Austin who have had or are having an impact on the field.

The Pioneers of the Psychedelics Movement

The Pioneers of the Psychedelics Movement saw the potential of psychedelics beyond their recreational use, prompting their groundbreaking efforts in the medical and scientific fields.People like Timothy Leary and Albert Hoffman are commonly remembered for their roles in popularizing psychedelics, drawing the attention of mainstream culture and sparking debate over the potential benefits and risks associated with these substances.

Despite the controversy surrounding many of its popular figures, there is no denying that this early group of advocates was instrumental in raising awareness of psychedelics within an academic context. These pioneers provided a platform – based on research and observation – from which future generations could build upon. Their support of well-thought-out and responsible applications for psychedelic use resulted in increased acceptance from academic and medical institutions alike, thereby paving the way to further inquiries into psychedelics’ potential therapeutic uses.

On the other hand, some have argued that this group of vocal activists for psychedelic use drummed up too much public attention without properly acknowledging its potentially dangerous effects. By glamorizing drug experimentation without advocating safe practices, these members of the early psychedelics movement were arguably driving irresponsible behaviour that undermined legitimate arguments in favour of more conservatively regulated clinical usage.

In any case, it is clear that these pioneers of the psychedelics movement catalyzed an important shift in attitude with regards to psychedelics use, both recreationally and medically, laying down the foundations for future generations to cultivate safer applications for psychedelic experiences.

Having established how these pioneers forged a path forward for the current psychedelics movement, we can now turn our attention to those who have taken up this mantle: The Scientists Doing Current Psychedelics Research.

The Scientists Doing Current Psychedelics Research

Scientific research into the world of psychedelics is at an all-time high in recent years. There are a number of dedicated and passionate scientists who have been leading the way in studying these drugs and trying to understand their effects on the human brain, nervous system, and consciousness. Some of the most influential scientists in the field include Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris at Imperial College London, David Nichols at Purdue University, and Dr. James Fadiman at Sofia University.

Dr. Carhart-Harris is best known for his work with MRI scans and functional connectivity analysis of the brains of psychedelics users. He has demonstrated that hallucinogens can alter our brains’ functional networks, with effects lasting for weeks after taking psychedelics. His research is mainly focused on psilocybin, LSD, and DMT. His findings suggest that psychedelics may be useful in treating depression, addiction, anxiety, chronic pain, eating disorders and more.

Dr. David Nichols has been researching psychedelic chemical structures since the 1970s. He has developed a number of theoretical models to explain how these drugs interact with the human body. He also works closely with other researchers to develop safer ways of administering various psychedelics as medicine.

James Fadiman – known affectionately as “Psychonaut Jim” by some – has been researching psychedelics both professionally and personally since 1966. He studies what he calls “the creative potential of psychoactive substances” – the ability they have to spur creative thoughts and ideas when used in a controlled environment. He is currently conducting ongoing microdosing experiments that he believes could revolutionize mental health care if properly backed up by empirical research findings in the future.

These are just a few examples of individuals who are having a major influence on the world of psychedelic science today – although there are undoubtedly many more whose names may not make it into mainstream scientific publications. Now let’s take a look at some of the psilocybin studies and treatments that have arisen from the work of these dedicated scientists over recent years.

Psychedelic history

Psychedelic history has been a contentious topic since the dawn of its use by preliterate societies in the Amazon rainforest and other ancient regions. While some experts have argued that these mind-altering substances can be traced back to spiritualist ceremonies, others disagree and say that psychedelic drugs were fairly common among early human cultures.

While various psychedelics, such as LSD, mescaline and psilocybin mushrooms, were first synthesized during the 1950s and ‘60s, they had been identified centuries before that. In 1799, a French pharmacist first isolated mescaline from peyote cactus. In 1895, the compound responsible for magic mushrooms was isolated in Amsterdam. And it’s believed that while psychedelics have been traditionally used for their psychogenic and physicochemical effects, they may also have had spiritual implications with many shamanic practices and rituals across different global cultures.

Some people also maintain that psychedelics have potential medicinal applications as well. Studies suggest that certain psychedelic substances can reduce anxiety symptoms in terminally ill patients or offer new ways to treat heroin addiction, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The debate over psychedelic history is ongoing—those who believe its usage is beneficial are opposed to those who view it as a potentially harmful habit. Despite the controversy surrounding the origin of psychedelic drugs, one thing is certain: Before their widespread criminalization in most parts of the world, mind-altering substances were part of our distant cultural past.

The next section will explore the life and work of Timothy Leary, an influential figure at the forefront of acceptance of psychedelic drugs.

Timothy Leary

By Dr. Dennis Bogdan – Own work using a Nikon Photomic FTn (35mm, SLR) camera, CC BY-SA 3.0

Timothy Leary is famously known as the icon of psychedelic culture. A Harvard psychology professor, Leary helped promote and popularize psychedelics use as a way to alter one’s consciousness in the 1960s. He taught courses focusing on LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, and related substances. His beliefs encouraged young people to use psychedelics in a safe and responsible manner while exploring spiritual experiences outside of traditional religious practices. This led many to refer to him as the “most dangerous man in America” according to former President Richard Nixon.

Despite his controversial reputation, there are those who view Timothy Leary’s work as positive and revolutionary. During his career, he authored several books on psychedelics and the exploration of altered states of consciousness. His famous phrase, “turn on, tune in, drop out” spoke of personal responsibility within the user’s psychedelic experience. As a result, he inspired many generations of youth and rebels to explore their minds and expand their perspectives.

On the other hand, there are critics who have cautioned against promoting psychedelic use for recreational or spiritual purposes without clinical supervision. They argue that individuals may be left with lasting psychological trauma if they take a misadventure with psychedlics without proper guidance from knowledgeable professionals or medical practitioners.

In sum, Timothy Leary has been an influential figure in the psychedelics movement by promoting its usage as a means for spiritual exploration despite certain risks associated with unregulated use.

Paul Stamets

By Dusty Yao-Stamets, CC BY 3.0

Paul Stamets is one of the most influential people in the psychedelics movement. For more than four decades, this biologist, mycologist, and noted author has been pushing the envelope when it comes to using mushrooms for various purposes.

Stamets’ work in fungi extends far beyond psychedelic compounds. As a biologist, he has studied how to utilize mushrooms in numerous other industries, such as bioremediation and beneficial insect control. He has even developed several mushroom-based products that are being sold through his company, Fungi Perfecti. His work in this field has resulted in a number of awards and accolades for his research.

Despite his influence and success, some have argued that Stamets isn’t truly influential because he doesn’t use psychedelics himself –– a claim he denies. He openly admits he’s not an advocate for recreational use of psychedelics, but notes that he spends much of his time advocating for their therapeutic potential. Thus, there is still debate surrounding whether Stamets’ influence should be considered primarily as a scientist or an advocate for psychedelic therapies.

The influence of Paul Stamets on the psychedelics movement is undeniable, though the exact nature of his impact may remain unclear. In the next section, we will look at how psychologists and therapists factor into the discussion with an exploration of those who conduct critical research on the efficacy of carefully supervised and monitored use of these substances to treat mental health disorders.

Alexander Shulgin

By JonRHanna – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0

Alexander “Sasha” Shulgin, often known as the “Godfather of Psychedelics,” is an influential figure in the world of psychedelics as an organic chemist, pharmacologist, and psychopharmacologist. Though he had a successful career in pharmaceuticals and biochemistry even before researching psychopharmaceuticals, it was his research of hundreds of psychoactive substances that catapulted him to fame.

In the 1960s and 70s, Shulgin helped to make MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) more widely available for both recreational use and therapeutic contexts. He believed that psychedelics had the potential to deeply transform individuals’ lives for the better and persisted in raising awareness about their potential applications in spite of increasing opposition from government policies.

Despite his status as a proponent for safe drug use among enthusiasts and researchers alike, there are some that are critical of his approach to psychedelics due to concerns about unintended consequences of using them. Critics have noted that despite Shulgin’s motivations to make drugs safer and more responsible, the way in which they are used is still largely uncontrolled, leading to serious health risks when used outside controlled settings. While these criticisms are well-founded, it cannot be denied that Shuling’s contributions significantly shaped the modern psychedelic movement and laid the groundwork for further exploration into the possibilities of psychedelics beyond recreation.

Lastly, Shulgin managed to bridge previously disparate pursuits such as medicine and spirituality, challenging people to think beyond conventional frames of reference. His legacy continues to live on in numerous clinics around the world dedicated to psychedelic-assisted therapies.

With Alexander Shulgin’s significant impact on the world of psychedelics established, we now turn our attention to other important influencers who have made advancements in this field: Psychedelic Industry Advocates.

Richard Alpert

By Joan Halifax – zalman, ramdass, CC BY 2.0

Richard Alpert, better known today as Ram Dass, is one of the most recognizable figures in the history of psychedelics. A Harvard psychology professor in the early 1960s, Richard Alpert teamed up with Timothy Leary to conduct controversial research on the effects of psilocybin and LSD. Together, they explored the potential of psychedelics for personal transformation and spiritual growth — a journey that eventually led them both to cross paths with spiritual teacher Neem Karoli Baba in India.

Under their guidance, Richard Alpert’s vision and mission were transformed, leading him to become an influential public spokesperson for psychedelics and an advocate for their potential benefits. He wrote several books about spirituality, healing and relationships based on his own experiences with psychedelics, offering practical insights into eastern thought, meditation, and self-discovery.

Though his work has had a lasting impact on many aspects of culture associated with psychedelics — from alternative medicine to yoga and inner exploration — he is also criticized for his role in catalyzing a psychedelic revolution that lacked scientific supervision or accountability. This lack of oversight eventually caused psychedelic use to become illegalized in the United States and much of the world during the 1970s.

Despite this criticism, Richard Alpert’s legacy remains intact; his pioneering research helped open minds and hearts worldwide by giving people deeper access to their own spiritual consciousness through psychedelic use. As healthcare professionals take increased interest in exploring the potential therapeutic benefits of psychedelics today, it’s not hard to remember where it all started — with Richard Alpert himself.

Moving forward, this article will look at how healthcare professionals are now exploring the potential benefits of psychedelics as part of a growing field of alternative medicine.

Albert Hofmann

The original uploader was Stepan at German Wikipedia.(Original text: Stepan) – Transferred from de.wikipedia to Commons.
Albert Hofmann, the father of modern psychedelics, is remembered as one of the most influential people in the field. Hofmann was an organic chemist best known for his work with LSD and other psychoactive compounds. In 1938, while working at Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, Switzerland, he became the first person to synthesize lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). In 1943, he accidentally ingested a dose of LSD and experienced its psychedelic effects firsthand, leading to a lifelong study of psychedelics and their potential therapeutic benefits. Hofmann’s discoveries led to a renewed interest in psychedelics as medicine and catalyzed the resurgence of psychotherapy.

Hofmann’s work inspired a generation of researchers and jumpstarted the scientific exploration of entheogens – plants or substances that can trigger spiritual or religious experiences. His research has not only shed light on how these compounds interact with the brain but also ushered in possibilities for using them therapeutically. Critics point out that this type of research could be controversial since there are potential risks when experimenting with certain substances, either mentally or physically. However, many argue that the potential benefits outweigh any perceived risks and that Hofmann opened up a new field that has been integral to helping people manage severe mental illness such as depression and anxiety disorders.

Hofmann’s discoveries have shaped the landscape for psychedelic science and reshaped our understanding of mental health. As we look toward the future of this ever growing industry, it is clear that his legacy will continue to have a lasting impact. With this in mind, it is important to recognize the key influencers who have helped make this possible – from scientists and advocates to venture capitalists and innovators – all coming together to shape the psychedelics industry we know today.

Aldous Huxley

By Aldous Huxley – A Case For ESP, PK and PSI. Life Magazine. 11 January, 1954.

Aldous Huxley (1894–1963) was an English writer, philosopher, and journalist best known for his novel Brave New World (1932). He also wrote extensively on topics related to philosophy and spirituality, but was also well known as a member of the psychedelic movement happening during the 50s and 60s.

Huxley first became interested in psychedelics during the 1950s after trying the psychedelic drug mescaline. It was this experience that inspired him to write two of his most famous works: The Doors of Perception (published in 1954), and Heaven and Hell (published in 1956). In these books he discussed his experience with the drug and the effect he felt it had on his consciousness. He went on to become one of the most vocal advocates for using psychedelics for spiritual growth, and these works became mega infuluential to the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

Huxley strongly believe that psychedelics had a big future as a tool to explore the self (or “turn on,” as he called it). He believed that psychedelics could be used as a tool to help people gain new insights into their own minds, and also become more creative. Aldous Huxley absolutely believed that psychedelics could help people with artistic, spiritual, and therapeutic exploration (something which science has confirmed in the years since his death). He was, however, pretty down on the use of psychedelics for recreational drug use, believing that they should only be used under the watchful eye of an experienced guide.

It is hard to overstate Huxley’s influence within the psychedelic movement. He was a mentor to many other pioneers that appear on this list, including Timothy Leary and Alan Watts. He also inspired many of the early psychedelic experiments that took place in the 1950s and 1960s, which had a hand in shaping our modern understanding of psychedelic substances. IN the decades since he passed on, his work has continued to serve as an excellent source of inspiration for those interested in exploring psychedelic experiences for spiritual and therapeutic purposes.

The Key Influencers in the Psychedelics Industry

The current psychedelics movement is driven by a number of key influencers who are working to promote the benefits of psychedelics for various medical and therapeutic purposes. These individuals have dedicated their time, energy, and resources to helping to create a more open and accepting environment around psychedelics. They have been instrumental in educating the public about psychedelics and advocating for increased research into their efficacy as treatments for mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

One of the primary influencers in the psychedelics industry is Rick Doblin, founder and president of MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies). Doblin has been an outspoken advocate for the use of psychedelic drugs for medical and therapeutic purposes since the early 1980s. He has helped lead the charge in legalizing certain psychedelic substances so that they can be studied more thoroughly. Additionally, Doblin has played a major role in organizing conferences on psychedelic science and policy and pushing for increased access to controlled substances such as MDMA, LSD, psilocybin, and ketamine.

Another key figure is former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson, who in 2019 signed into law a bill that decriminalized “natural psychedelics” such as psilocybin mushrooms within Albuquerque city limits. In doing so, Johnson opened up new avenues of research around psychedelic substances as well as provided a model for other cities to follow. Much like Doblin, Johnson has become an outspoken proponent of increasing access to psychedelic treatments and expanding research into their potential benefits.

Stanislav Grof is another critical figure in the psychedelics movement whose work has both shaped research into psychedelics and inspired others to pursue such studies. For over four decades, Grof has been researching how consciousness-altering effects of psychedelics can help people heal from psychological wounds or trauma while simultaneously uncovering new creative possibilities. Grof was also one of the first figures to bring attention to the therapeutic potentials of non-psychedelic plants, through his groundbreaking experiments with ayahuasca, which he called “Holotropic Breathwork.

Finally, there are numerous activists who have been organizing at a grassroots level to create acceptance around issues related to psychedelics. These include organizations such as The Zendo Project in the United States, which provides sober support at music festivals where psychoactive substances may be present; DanceSafe in Canada; and some groups within Europe like MycoMeditations, which offer healing retreats utilizing psilocybin mushrooms in countries where it is legal. All these activists have been making significant contributions toward changing public opinion about psychedelics and providing compassionate care when needed.

I didn’t have the space to mention EVERY PERSON that deserves to be mentioned in a list like this, but in the interest of giving credit where it is due, here are some pioneers to consider in addition to the names that made this list:

Humphry Osmond

Myron Stolaroff

Leo Zeff

John C. Lilly

Terence McKenna

Ralph Metzner

Overall, these key influencers have all had a significant impact on advancing current understandings about how psychedelics can be used safely outside of research settings while targeting specific areas where they could help people potentially overcome mental health disorders or awaken spiritual insights. With continued education efforts along with reforms towards decriminalization and greater access restrictions, these influencers will continue to play a pivotal role in creating a new era in psychedelic medicine and therapy ushered by a more progressive approach towards exploring its potentials.

How have these influential people contributed to psychedelics research?

Ah, psychedelics, you famously misunderstood party drug category long-shrouded in misconceptions and stigma, the plot point in a hundred terribly-written TV shows, and the villain of an entire decade. Lately, though, actual scientific study and a growing body of evidence is shedding new light on the powerful potential for perpetuating positive change in matters of mental health (not to mention spirituality and consciousness). When considering psychedelic and hallucinogens these days, we must take into account the rigourous clinic trials and personal anecdotes of profound healing–there is much to unpack around the seemilgly simple question of “what are psychedelics?”

I have tried to keep things clear and focused in this article, sticking to the basics. I’ll discuss the different types of psychoactive and mind-altering drugs and their unique effects. I’ll investigate emerging scientific research findings (helped by our resident MD Ankush Patel), and speak to the debate of just how the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks.

Ultimately, my goal is to help you better understand the power of psychedelics to heal, to spark creativity, and open new doors in our very human pursuit to understand consciousness.

Rick Strassman, an American clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, had this to say about what psychedelics are:

“Psychedelics show you what’s in and on your mind, those subconscious thoughts and feelings that are hidden, covered up, forgotten, out of sight, maybe even completely unexpected, but nevertheless imminently present. Depending upon set and setting, the same drug, at the same dose, can cause vastly different responses in the same person. One day, very little happens; another day, you soar, full of ecstatic and insightful discoveries; the next, you struggle through a terrifying nightmare. The generic nature of psychedelic, a term wide open to interpretation, suits these effects.”

— Rick Strassman

WHAT DOES “PSYCHEDELIC” MEAN?

The word ‘Psychedelic’ comes from the Ancient Greek psukhḗ, meaning ‘mind’ or ‘soul’ and dêlos meaning to ‘manifest’ or ‘make visible’. Psychedelic refers to a psychoactive substance, natural or synthetic that facilitates the alteration of consciousness and temporarily alters sensory perceptions. The broad term encompasses ‘ethnobotanicals’ or plants used by traditional societies in some practical or ritualistic fashion, or compounds manufactured specifically to interact with neurochemistry and engineer altered states and enhanced perception.

In addition to psychoactive substances, altered states of consciousness can be achieved through means as diverse as auditory stimulation, ecstatic dance, breathing techniques, meditation and fasting among many others.

What Are Psychedelics?

Psychedelics (hallucinagens) are a class of drugs that produce profound changes in perception, thought, and emotion, as well as visual and auditory hallucinations. Commonly used psychedelics include LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, MDMA (ecstasy) and DMT.
The effects of psychedelics on the mind vary widely depending on individual experience, environmental setting, and other factors. Generally, they may cause alteration in one’s sense of time, space, consciousness and self-awareness, increased creativity and insightfulness, enhanced sensory experience with music, light or art. They can also evoke profound spiritual awakenings and ecstatic states. Physiological studies have shown that psychedelic substances can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, increase mindfulness skills and even change attitudes towards death.
On the other hand, some detractors argue that psychedelics are dangerous substances due to their potential side effects such as fear and anxiety during the experience, impaired judgment afterwards and long term perceptual changes from overuse. Additionally, there is a risk of psychosis or hallucinatory episodes when taken in an uncontrolled setting or when combined with other drugs or medications.

Next, I’ll explore several of the most well-known and most-used psychedelic substances.

Psilocybin

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain species of mushrooms. It has been used for centuries by indigenous cultures for spiritual and medicinal purposes. For example, the Aztecs referred to psilocybin as teonanácatl, or “divine mushroom”, and believed it could bring about divine visions and healing powers.

History of Use:

Psilocybin has been used in religious ceremonies since ancient times. In the 1950s, scientists began investigating its impact on humans and ascertained that it might generate intense psychological changes such as augmented compassion, increased creativity, altered states of awareness, improved emotional states, and diminished levels of nervousness. Recreational users have been drawn to psilocybin for its capacity to induce unique altered states of consciousness without the use of alcohol or cannabis.

The effects of psilocybin can vary depending on dosage size, but generally include feelings of euphoria, relaxation and heightened senses such as visuals. It has also been linked to introspection into one’s thoughts, feelings and emotions; increased empathy towards others or even animals; and a decreased fear response to stimuli which would normally cause fear responses. Additionally, research suggests that there may be potential therapeutic benefits associated with using psilocybin – for example, reducing symptoms related to depression and anxiety disorders, as well as helping individuals quit smoking cigarettes or reduce alcohol consumption when taken in controlled settings with trained professionals present during sessions where this substance is administered.

Psilocybin has a long and complex history of use, with potential effects ranging from spiritual enlightenment to therapeutic benefits. As we move on to the next psychedelic, MDMA, let us explore its unique journey and effects.

MDMA

MDMA (also known as ecstasy or molly) is a synthetic psychoactive drug that produces feelings of euphoria, increased energy, and emotional closeness. It has been used recreationally since the 1980s and has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its ability to produce intense feelings of pleasure and connection with others. Legality varies from country to country, with some countries allowing its use for medical or therapeutic purposes while others have banned it entirely.

History of Use:

MDMA was first synthesized by German scientists in 1912 but did not gain popularity until the late 1970s when it began being used at underground dance parties in Europe. By the mid-1980s, MDMA had spread throughout North America and became widely available on college campuses across the United States. In 1985, it was classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, which made it illegal to possess or distribute without a prescription.

Effects and Benefits:

When taken orally, MDMA typically takes effect within 30 minutes and can last up to 6 hours depending on dosage size. The effects include an increase in energy levels, heightened senses such as sight and sound clarity, improved empathy towards others, decreased anxiety levels, reduced fear response time during stressful situations, along with enhanced self-confidence, among other things. Some studies have also suggested that MDMA may be beneficial for treating certain mental health conditions such as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

MDMA has been widely used for its various therapeutic and recreational benefits, but the legal implications of its use vary from country to country. Despite this, LSD remains a popular psychedelic with an interesting history that continues to captivate many users today.

LSD

LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is a powerful hallucinogenic drug that was first synthesized in 1938 by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann. It produces profound changes in perception, thought processes, and emotions that can last up to 12 hours after ingestion. Legality varies from country to country, with some countries allowing its use for medical or therapeutic purposes while others have banned it entirely.

History of Use:

LSD has been used recreationally since the 1950s and 1960s when it became popular among counterculture movements such as the hippies and beatniks. In recent years, there has been an increase in research into the potential therapeutic benefits of LSD for treating mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Effects and Benefits:

The effects of LSD are unpredictable due to its potency; however, users typically experience heightened sensory awareness, altered perceptions of time and space, visual distortions, feelings of euphoria or intense fear depending on their environment at the time they take it. Some people report having spiritual experiences while under the influence of LSD which can lead to long-term positive changes in attitude or behavior.

LSD has had a long and fascinating history, and while its effects can be both beneficial and detrimental, it is important to understand the legal implications of using this psychedelic. Now let’s take a look at another powerful psychedelic: mescaline.

Mescaline

Mescaline is a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid found in certain cacti such as peyote and San Pedro cactus. It has been used by indigenous cultures for thousands of years for spiritual ceremonies and healing rituals. Mescaline has also become popular among modern-day psychonauts who seek to explore altered states of consciousness, increased empathy, and enhanced creativity.

History of Use:

The use of mescaline dates back thousands of years when it was consumed by Indigenous peoples in North America during religious ceremonies or healing rituals. In the early 20th century, mescaline became popular among Westerners seeking an experience with psychedelics due to its relative accessibility compared to other substances like LSD or psilocybin mushrooms.

When taken orally, mescaline can induce a variety of experiences including alterations in perception (e.g. visual distortions), shifts in consciousness, heightened empathy for others, augmented creativity, introspection into one’s feelings and thoughts, improved moods and decreased levels of anxiety. The duration of these effects typically spans four to eight hours depending on the dose ingested.

The legality surrounding mescaline varies from country to country; some countries allow its use for medical or therapeutic purposes, while others have banned it entirely. In the United States, possession or sale of mescaline is illegal under federal law. However, there are exceptions made for Native American tribes who are allowed to possess peyote for ceremonial purposes only if they register with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Mescaline has been used for centuries by various cultures for spiritual and medicinal purposes, but its legal status remains controversial. Now let’s take a look at some of the other psychedelics available today.

Other Psychedelics

Psychedelics are a class of drugs that produce profound changes in perception, thought processes, and emotions through their interaction with serotonin receptors in the brain. They include compounds such as psilocybin mushrooms a.k.a. magic mushrooms (a hallucinogen), ayahuasca (a South America-based plant-based brew), DMT (dimethyltryptamine), ketamine (a dissociative anesthetic), ibogaine (an African shrub), salvia divinorum (a Mexican herb) and 2C-B (a synthetic drug). Legality varies from country to country depending on the specific substance being discussed; some psychedelics are legal while others are not allowed under any circumstances due to their potential risks when misused or abused.

There is a wide range of psychedelic substances available today, from naturally occurring plants and fungi to synthetically produced chemicals. There are the natural psychedelics I’ve already discussed, including psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, peyote cactus containing mescaline, San Pedro cactus containing mescaline, as well as less popular sources: morning glory seeds containing lysergic acid amide or LSA, nutmeg with myristicin and elemicin as active ingredients; while synthetic psychedelics comprise LSD (first synthesized by Albert Hofmann in 1938), MDMA (also known as ecstasy), ketamine (used medically as an anesthetic but recreationally for its dissociative effects), 2C-B developed by Alexander Shulgin in 1974; dimethyltryptamine or DMT found naturally in certain plants like Psychotria viridis and Mimosa hostilis; 5-MeO-DMT present in Bufo alvarius frogs plus many other compounds having psychoactive properties.

Psychedelic use has a long history, with evidence suggesting that ancient cultures used these substances for spiritual rituals and healing purposes. In modern times, however, they have been mostly associated with recreational use. Over the past few decades, there has been increasing interest in exploring their therapeutic potentials, particularly for treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, eating disorders and end of life distress. Recently the FDA approved two clinical trials involving psilocybin therapy: one at Johns Hopkins University School Of Medicine focusing on major depressive disorder (MDD) treatment; another at NYU Langone Medical Center looking into smoking cessation treatments.

The impact of psychedelics may fluctuate contingent upon the kind, amount, atmosphere and environment. Generally speaking, most people who take them report positive experiences, even if it may be challenging emotionally, physically or mentally during peak moments. These effects can last anywhere between four to eight hours after ingestion, ranging from mild alterations in mood perception such as color intensity and sound clarity to intense altered states where users report feeling connectedness, unity, understanding, insight, and revelation.

What are psychedelics good for?

Psychedelics are powerful tools for personal growth and exploration. Emerging scientific research suggest psychedelic substances may reduce anxiety, depression, and addiction while promoting creativity, insight, and self-awareness. Psychedelics can also be used to explore the spiritual, or expand one’s understanding of reality. In addition, they have been studied as potential treatments for a variety of mental health conditions such as PTSD and OCD. Ultimately, psychedelics offer an opportunity to gain greater insight into oneself and the world around us – making them invaluable in our journey towards self-discovery.

Do Psychedelics Induce Hallucinations?

Hallucinations are caused by a variety of drugs, including psilocybin, MDMA (ecstasy), LSD, and mescaline. These substances can cause visual or auditory hallucinations that may range from mild to intense depending on the dose taken. They can also cause altered states of consciousness, changes in perception and mood, and other effects. It is important to note that these drugs should be used with caution and only under the supervision of a qualified medical professional.

What are the effects of using psychedelics?

The effects of using psychedelics vary depending on the drug taken and the individual experiencing them. Generally, users can expect to feel a heightened level of perceptual awareness and altered states of consciousness, which can include so-called “spiritual” experiences. Commonly reported effects of psychedelics include visual and auditory distortions, increased introspection, a sense of unity with others and nature, and a deeper appreciation for life. Psychedelic drugs have also been associated with increased creativity and a more profound psychological understanding. With careful consideration and safety protocols in place, research suggests that there may be beneficial therapeutic uses for psychedelic drugs in treating mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, addiction, and anxiety.

What safety measures should be taken when using psychedelics?

When it comes to safety measures for using psychedelics, the first and most important piece of advice is to make sure that you are in a safe environment with people that you trust. It is also essential to have someone sober with you who can monitor your experience and be available in case of an emergency. Additionally, it is advisable to ensure that you are well hydrated before and during the psychedelic session, and prepare a set of activities or tasks that can be done if needed. Other important safety considerations include avoiding operating any heavy machinery or driving after taking psychedelics, as well as avoiding combining them with alcohol or other drugs. Lastly, it is recommended to research the psychedelic substance thoroughly beforehand in order to know what effects to expect and any potential risks associated with its use.

What are the most common types of psychedelics?

The most common types of psychedelics are those in the lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin (magic mushrooms), and mescaline (peyote) families. LSD, also known as acid, is an odorless and colorless synthesized chemical whose effects can last up to 12 hours. Psilocybin mushrooms can be eaten or brewed into a tea, with effects lasting around 4-6 hours. Mescaline is found naturally in peyote cacti (a type of cactus) and other members of the cactus family, with effects lasting around 12 hours.

These psychedelics produce intense changes in mood, altered perception of reality, enhanced creativity, feelings of unity with nature or others, and spiritual insight. Short-term potential risks include anxiety, confusion and panic attacks, while long-term risks may include flashbacks, impaired judgement, psychosis and psychological dependence.

Psychedelic Effects on Mental Health

Psychedelic drugs have become increasingly popular over the past few years for their potential to treat mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. While many people believe that psychedelics are safe, there’s still a lot of unknown risk associated with taking them — so it’s important to be informed before using these substances.

It’s been well-documented how psychedelics can alter one’s consciousness, resulting in powerful visual and auditory hallucinations, altered perception, and uncontrollable emotions — but what about their effect on mental health?

Some studies have suggested that psychedelics may have a positive impact on mental health by helping to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Psychedelic experiences often bring feelings of acceptance and connection, which may explain why they are so effective at treating psychological disorders. For instance, in one study published in The British Journal of Psychiatry, researchers found that after taking psilocybin (one of the active compounds in “magic mushrooms”), 64 percent of participants had no signs of depression or anxiety after six months. Additionally, there is evidence that psychedelics like LSD can help fight addiction by reducing cravings for cigarettes and alcohol.

On the other hand, there is also evidence indicating that psychedelic experiences can actually worsen mental health issues and even induce psychosis. In some cases, people who take these drugs experience powerful negative emotions like fear and confusion that can cause lasting psychological damage. And because psychedelics interact with brain chemistry in unpredictable ways — it’s impossible to predict how they will affect an individual’s personality or mental state.

Therefore, it’s important to consider both the potential benefits and risks of taking psychedelics before deciding whether or not to use them as therapy for mental health concerns. With more research being conducted each day into their effects on mental health, it could be possible to find ways to maximize their positive effects while minimizing any potential harm.

Making Consciousness a Tool for Healing

The notion of using consciousness as a tool for healing has become increasingly more accepted in recent years as a practical “outside-the-laboratory” method of capturing the benefits of entheogens. Psychedelic drugs, with their ability to unlock emotional clarity and stimulate thought, may have tremendous potential for therapeutic applications. In particular, psychedelics can be used to tap into the subconscious—the part of your psyche that is inaccessible to most people during everyday life—bringing about healing by allowing for exploration of parts of oneself that are difficult to access without psychedelic use.

Much research has been done exploring the potential healing power of psychedelics, but not all of it has been positive. Some researchers feel that psychedelic drugs disrupt conscious thought processes, creating an altered state that leads to confusion or even worsen existing mental health challenges. While they agree that attitude and set can play an important role in shaping the psychedelic experience, most believe that the lack of control makes psychedelics inappropriate medicine.

On the other hand, there is a substantial amount of evidence citing the potential benefits of psychedelic use when done responsibly and within controlled environments, such as clinical trials or medical settings. Studies have found that psychedelics can help those struggling with mental health issues process trauma and reduce anxiety levels, as well as offer insights into unconscious patterns in behavior or thinking which can be beneficial when trying to overcome addictions or working through underlying emotional difficulties. Furthermore, psychedelics could potentially help those dealing with depression find clarity and meaning in their lives again, as well as enhance creativity-related matters.

In summary, although there is much debate around making consciousness a tool for healing via psychedelic drug use, there is a considerable amount of research showing its potential therapeutic value when administered safely and responsibly in a clinical setting. As we move forward into exploring the potential medical applications of psychedelics in greater detail, it is essential to weigh both sides of this debate carefully..

Potential Medical Applications of Psychedelics

The use of classic psychedelics such as LSD, psilocybin and mescaline (to name a few) has re-entered clinical trials in the past two decades, particularly among various indices of mental health. While there is still a long road ahead before definitive medical applications can be established and widespread acceptance occurs, psychedelic drugs have been examined as potential treatments for a number of medical ailments including addiction and substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, cluster headaches, and anorexia nervosa.

The therapeutic benefits appear to be considerable. For example, addiction recovery studies have observed significantly lower relapse rates among participants who utilized LSD or psilocybin in conjunction with traditional psychotherapeutic techniques. Likewise, other recent studies utilizing psilocybin suggest it may be effective in reducing symptoms associated with treatment-resistant depression, helping people emerge from their psychological woes with renewed optimism.

On the contrary, some are skeptical of the potential for therapeutic uses of psychedelics because of drawbacks that come along with any drug use. This includes potential for abuse; overdose; interactions with other medications; possible health consequences; anxiety, panic attacks or flashback episodes during or after use; personal safety concerns; and in some cases, requiring legal authorization or medical supervision. Such risks must not be overlooked when making an informed decision about taking these substances.

Raising further questions is why psychedelics actually help those suffering from various mental illnesses. Many believe this could be attributed to heightened awareness while under the influence of a psychedelic substance, which can lead users to view their lives from different perspectives with greater insight into how they think and feel. It’s also possible that psychedelics grant access to unconscious material previously inaccessible to conventional therapies – providing users with insight into the root causes of their illness and opening up potential avenues for conscious healing to begin. It is clear that extra study is needed to either confirm or deny these theories about why psychedelics have shown great promise in treating certain maladies.

Despite the controversial nature of psychedelic drugs and the mixed opinions on their therapeutic value, it’s undeniable that they have demonstrated immense promise in numerous clinical settings thus far. As research constantly evolves on this subject – better understanding efficacy; uncovering novel uses; finding ways to reduce risk factors – we move closer towards unlocking their full healing potential. The following section will explore how psychedelics are being used as therapy for treating depression.

Using Psychedelics for Depression Therapy

Using psychedelics for depression therapy is becoming increasingly popular, and there are a variety of studies and research outlining the potential benefits in recent years. Studies conducted on psilocybin, a psychoactive compound found in certain mushrooms, report that it effectively reduces symptoms of depression, with effects lasting up to several months. For individuals who have not been able to find relief from conventional medications, psychedelics may provide an alternative option to treat both anxiety and depression.

Many argue that psychedelic drugs could be more effective than traditional antidepressants due to the nature of their effect on the brain, as they target areas of the brain associated with emotions and self-reflection that standard antidepressant medications do not. Supporters further argue that these medications lack risk factors associated with antidepressant use, such as weight gain or addiction. Psychedelic drugs may also offer long-term improvements in mood due to their effects on the brain’s neural pathways.

However, opponents point to the lack of peer-reviewed clinical trials as well as the potential for abuse of psychedelic drugs as concerns about using them for depression treatment. Furthermore, these drugs are considered Schedule I by the FDA and are illegal under most circumstances. Therefore, critics question if there is enough evidence to suggest any conventional use of psychedelics as we lack a thorough understanding of their long-term effects.

It is clear that while there is much potential behind using psychedelics for treating depression, there remain numerous ethical and legal considerations when it comes to exploring this form of therapy and more research must be conducted into its safety and efficacy before it can become widely available. Furthering our knowledge on this topic is essential before utilizing psychedelics widely for clinical purposes. As such, next we will explore some of the risks involved with using psychedelic drugs.

The Dangers of Psychedelic Drug Use

The risks associated with the use of psychedelic drugs are no trivial matter and must be understood by anyone considering using them. As drugs that cause shifts in perception, altered thought patterns, and unpredictable physical side effects, psychedelics can produce a range of intense experiences, both positive and negative. Even when used responsibly, unexpected challenges can present themselves. When taken without proper guidance or instruction, the risks are compounded.

The primary danger related to using psychedelic drugs lies in the potential for adverse psychological reactions such as increased anxiety and paranoia or full-blown psychotic episodes. These reactions may appear during or after drug use and can stay with an individual for hours or weeks after taking a psychedelic drug. Such reactions are relatively infrequent but do occur, especially among those already predisposed to having mental health issues—whether they are aware of them or not. Additional physical risks associated with psychedelics include hyperthermia, dehydration, high blood pressure, tachycardia, arrhythmia, tremors, and seizures.

The use of psychedelics can also increase the risk of becoming accidently injured due to the impaired judgment sometimes brought on by these drugs. And because most street drugs are sold unlabeled, one cannot always know what exactly is being ingested. Contaminants may lead to more serious medical conditions including illnesses like Hepatitis C or staph infections. Further, combining different substances significantly increases the chances for unexpected negative outcomes such as overdose or death.

These potential harms highlight why it’s important for individuals considering using psychedelics to do so responsibly. For example, preparing appropriately before a session (both physically and mentally) as well as taking only pure substances from reliable sources can help minimize risks while allowing someone to experience its unique therapeutic effects.

Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that any form of drug use carries its own set of tightly coupled benefits and risks that should be carefully weighed prior to any decision that involves taking a psychedelic substance. With this in mind, we turn next towards the body of research delving into these remarkable natural compounds and the growing knowledge about their therapeutic effects and potential applications.

With an increasingly favorable shift in public opinion about psychedelics in recent years, a greater focus is being placed on understanding both the practical uses these compounds have in treating mental health issues as well as their overall safety profiles. In the following section we will explore some areas where scientific research on psychedelic drugs has been conducted and how their findings inform our view on this topic today.

Studies suggest that there are medical applications for psychedelics, including the treatment of mental health conditions such as anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. Research also suggests that psychedelics could be used to treat various other physical ailments, including migraines, chronic pain, and even cancer-related symptoms.

Some proponents of psychedelic drug use argue that incorporating certain psychedelics into one’s lifestyle can produce several life-enhancing experiences, such as improved moods and greater insight into personal issues. Others believe that the risks associated with psychedelic use, such as the potential for negative psychological effects and increased risk-taking behavior, far outweigh any potential benefits.

These differing perspectives showcase the debate surrounding psychedelic drug use that continues to affect public opinion and legislation today. In spite of this controversy, recent advancements in research have revealed promising evidence about the potential therapeutic applications of psychedelics in both physical and mental health contexts. As such, further research is needed to better understand the interaction between doctor- or self-administered psychedelic drugs and their impact on the human body before these substances are widely accepted as medical treatments.

With an increasing need for carefully conducted research to better understand the implications of psychedelic drug use, it’s clear that much more needs to be discovered in order to gain a deeper understanding of their impact on various aspects of our lives. The final word on psychedelics is yet to come, but advancement in research efforts is bringing us closer to unlocking their true potential.

The Final Word on Psychedelics

Psychedelics have long been a source of controversy, but their potential for therapeutic and spiritual value is gaining notoriety in recent years. While the long-term effects of psychedelic drug use remain largely unexplored and their legal status remains a contentious issue, psychedelic drugs offer a promising avenue to explore the complex but fascinating nature of the brain.

On one hand, psychedelics have been associated with mental health problems such as panic attacks, psychotic episodes, and depression. However, there is evidence to suggest that under certain conditions, psychedelic drugs can also result in improved mood, creativity and empathy. While psychedelics should not be used recreationally due to the potential risks involved, their use in supervised psychotherapeutic settings can offer many benefits.

At this point in time, researchers are still exploring the safety profile and potential beneficial impacts of psychedelics. Clinical trials are ongoing to determine which forms of treatment they may be most beneficial for, as well as optimal dosing considerations. While it is impossible to definitively state whether or not psychedelics can be beneficial for all individuals, emerging research is beginning to shed light on the matter.

Ultimately, when considering psychedelics, it is important to weigh both the known positive effects along with any potential risks associated with their use. As research continues and more becomes known about how these substances interact with the brain, we will gain even more insight into their effects on our mental health and wellbeing.
